Meet Maria Sanchez

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Maria Sanchez. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Maria below.

Maria, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

I found my purpose by volunteering and learning about my local community in my church, my daughter’s school, my daughter’s soccer team, swim team and later on I started volunteer with two non profit organizations that serve the Latinx community in NC.
Serving my community and learning about their needs and struggles gave me a better idea of the type of job that I wanted to have. To fulfill my purpose of making a difference and advocate for my community by helping people and being able to empower them to take charge of their health with information, education about healthcare resources and organize health promotion community events and health fairs that gives them access to free health screenings, free vaccines, to care better for their health, and have a better life.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

HEALTH PROMOTION AND DISSEASE PREVENTION COORDINATOR

I’m the Health Promotion Coordinator of El Centro Hispano, the Health Window in the Mexican Consulate and the Health Mobile Unit

It its my joy to serve our community of immigrants that live in North Carolina and South Carolina

The Mexican Consulate Health Window-is a program that covers the two states of North Carolina and South Carolina.

The Health Window program focus in health promotion, disease prevention, education about health and empowers our community of immigrants to learn how to navigate the healthcare system of America, learn about the low cost health resources in their counties so they can take control of their health and learn how to manage or prevent chronic health conditions so they can have better healthier life’s. The Mexican Consulate Health Window is physically located inside the Mexican Consulate in Raleigh NC, everyday we offer free health screenings like Blood Pressure, Glucose for our community that visits the Consulate in Raleigh NC

The Health Mobile Unit-Is a program that focus on health promotion, disease prevention, we bring the health resources, health screenings, vaccines to the rural, marginalized communities that doesn’t have access to healthcare in their areas.

As a Health Promotion Coordinator of these two programs, one of the biggest challenges is finding the free health screenings and vaccines for our community, meet the demand of health services and making new alliances or partnerships with health agencies that are willing to support this programs for our community of immigrants

I have passion for what I do! one of the greatest feelings in the world is to see how we are starting to change the narrative in community health and advance equity and justice in the near future, I’m very lucky be surrounded by individuals and partner agencies that go the extra mile to serve and advocate for our marginalized communities in North Carolina and South Carolina

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

1-FIND YOUR PURPOSE

2- BE PERSISTANCE + RESILIENCE

3-DREAM BIG AND NEVER STOP DREAMING

4-SURROUND YOURSELF WITH ALLIES THAT EMPOWER YOU AND SUPPORT YOU AND LIFT YOU UP

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

I think the most important thing my parents did for me was to loved me and let me be myself

This are the things that I have from both of them that make me unique

From my mother-I have the sweet side of her, to give and help others unconditionally

From my father-I see his strength, perseverance and resilience reflected in myself
