Meet Mariel Mercedes

We recently connected with Mariel Mercedes and have shared our conversation below.

Mariel, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

I have been struggling with depression for over 20 years after going through a traumatic situation that left its mark on me. During those 20 years of depression I had several moments where I thought that there was no point in continuing to live.for me, being able to finally not have depression and not need medication after 20 years is what I truly call resilience.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Two years ago I started a podcast in Spanish talking about various topics but over time I started to find my own voice and at that moment I understood that I could do the podcast but that I could also focus on a topic that is very important to me, which is mental health. The podcast features guests from mental health backgrounds, but also guests who talk about how they live day to day with depression and anxiety.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

One of the important points was to recognize that I had gone through a trauma and that as a result of this I had depression and severe anxiety. It was important to understand that I needed help, but the most important thing was to seek professional help in order to move forward.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

My family was definitely a great support for me in my struggle with depression and trauma. But also getting involved in volunteering at the suicide prevention association gave meaning to my life.
