We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Blck Bird String Ensemble. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Blck Bird below.
Blck Bird, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
The Blck Bird String ensembles recognizes the significance of creativity and the necessity of maintaining that vital spark. As professional musicians, we often face burnout due to overwork, repetitive tasks, or a lack of direction. Therefore, we engage in open discussions regarding the suitability of gigs and private events in relation to our purpose and existing commitments. Fortunately, our quartet structure allows us the flexibility to form duos or trios, which aids in mitigating creative fatigue and provides opportunities for individual members to take necessary breaks. We also prioritize refreshing our repertoire, consistently seeking new works that challenge and inspire both ourselves and our audiences. This ongoing innovation in our set list and the emphasis on purposeful engagements have been instrumental in sustaining our creativity in a healthy and dynamic manner.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
The BLCK Bird String Ensemble, founded in 2023, has quickly gained recognition for its commitment to promoting diversity and education within the musical landscape. The ensemble prioritizes the exploration of innovative compositions and lesser-known works originating from the African diaspora. Their performances showcase a rich repertoire that includes classical masterpieces, notable 20th-century pieces, popular R&B selections, and newly commissioned works, reflecting a vibrant musical journey. As ardent supporters of the arts and educational initiatives, the BLCK Bird String Ensemble views chamber music as a powerful vehicle for enhancing communication and fostering understanding across various races, cultures, and nations. Their artistic endeavors are not solely focused on performance; they actively engage with the community to promote cultural appreciation and inclusivity through music. This approach underscores their belief in the transformative power of the arts. The quartet comprises talented musicians: Rageen Washington on violin, Erika Wilson on violin, Monet Royal on viola, and Tai Davis on cello. Together, they are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of musicians and enriching the cultural fabric of their communities through their innovative programming and educational outreach.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three significant insights we have gained as a group are the essential roles that teamwork, transparency/open communication, and delegation of duties play within our ensemble. . Given the various elements at play, it is imperative to allocate specific roles and responsibilities to each member according to their unique strengths. We participate in comprehensive discussions, understanding that clarity and robust systems are critical for the success of our team.
