We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Daniel Perry a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Daniel, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
Unlike other photographers who specialize in one genre their entire career.
I like to blur the lines between commercial and fine art while continuously growing with each new project, no matter how extreme or mundane.
My inspiration and challenge is to elevate the audience.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Daniel Perry is a creative commercial photographer with 25 years of international experience. He documents the world of entertainment, luxury, and American pop culture. Daniel creates advertising, editorial, social, and fine art content. He has contributed to many major magazines and has been featured in three coffee table books. His work has been exhibited in over 40 invitational and solo gallery shows on the East and West coasts. He has also been interviewed for the television show Entertainment Tonight in New York.
He was awarded his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. His photographs are included in the permanent print and picture collections of the Philadelphia Free Library. After graduation, he worked for Marie Claire magazine in Paris before moving to New York and settling in Palm Beach. From the fashion, film, and music industries, he has photographed accomplished personalities such as Bjork, Andy Warhol, Naomi Campbell, Cardi B, Paris Hilton, Yves St. Laurent, Jane Fonda, and Tyra Banks.
Daniel is currently exhibiting at the Artist Collective in West Palm Beach and teaching courses through the Boca Museum Art School.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Fine art background and influences are essential to my work. Along with a good work ethic and to approach each project uniquely.
Self-actualization, or self-transcendence, represents where one’s potential is fully realized after more basic needs.
Early on, you need to find self-discipline, dedicate studio time, and create the best version of yourself.
Make sure to relate with other creative people in your art community to find inspiration.
Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
I’m constantly looking for talent to collaborate with. The best of my work involves teams of creatives who specialize in their crafts.
