We were lucky to catch up with Mariah Mochon recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Mariah, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?
Owning a self-care-centered business allows me to help others prioritize their well-being, yet I’m still learning how to care for myself. I’ve discovered that unplugging is the most satisfying and effective form of self-care for me. With my business, I’m constantly on social media, responding to emails, contacting vendors, and brainstorming new box concepts. Turning off my phone and stepping away from work helps me decompress and recenter. When I return to business, I find I’m more focused, creative, and motivated. Self-care is always evolving, but maintaining a clear division between my business and personal life is essential.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
Unfortunately, my uncle Markie committed suicide in September of 2012. It was a rude awakening that made me realize we never truly know what people are struggling with. I began to struggle with severe depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts as I got older. I reached a breaking point where I was given the hard truth that I had to start doing what many would call “self care”. As I started on this journey, I wanted to in turn help others find that connection between self care and mental health. I stared to make self care boxes that resonated with myself and my mental health. I wanted to make them simple, joyful, and full of things that would actually help people’s mental health. I decided to source everything for my boxes from small businesses because who better to help others feel loved. People began to resonate with my mission and authenticity and things just took off. I continued to bridge the gap between self care and mental health with my boxes and started to foster a community of like-minded individuals. I started to think bigger and began to host self care retreats in my community that were an instant success. I am so proud of the growth & success my little business has had, but more proud that I am able to help show people that self care and mental health can go hand in hand. There really is not enough hope in this world and if I can help one person walk away from suicide then I have done what I am meant to do. I am extremely excited for our Holiday Self Care Advent Calendar. It offers an opportunity to send some joy to many people who need extra joy and sunshine around the holidays.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Along my journey optimism, perseverance, and the ability to adapt have been the most impactful. Life and business will throw everything, including the kitchen sink, at you. It’s how you react to it that will determine your success. Being able to adapt to these challenges, persevere, and see the silver linings truly will make all the difference.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I start to feel overwhelmed I step back and take a break. Going at something with a frustrated attitude and overwhelmed brain will help you achieve nothing. I take a step back, breathe, and do something that I enjoy. This reset helps me come at my challenges with a new mindset and patience that allows me to find solutions that I would’ve otherwise missed.
