Meet Kateryna Vistyzenko

We were lucky to catch up with Kateryna Vistyzenko recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kateryna, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?

Purpose sounds too grand. But if I were to say it that way, I believe my purpose is fully realizing my potential in various spheres of life and in understanding myself and the world. This includes my work in science, where I am writing a PhD on studying speech development in a bilingual environment, my interaction with IT, creating designs for brands and websites, as well as creating children’s books and, of course, painting, fine arts, and computer graphics; yoga as a main tool, helping me feel my body and its responses to everyday realities.

Each new experience and moment of inspiration helps me better understand myself and discover new horizons in the world around me. Through creativity, I relay my impressions and observations. It’s important for me to share this with others, to encourage them to reflect and feel.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am an artist, and my work focuses on a deep exploration of emotions and the connections between color and perception. My goal is to create art that not only pleases the eye but also touches the soul.

This year, I had the incredible opportunity to hold a solo exhibition in Delray Beach, Florida, where I showcased my series titled “Feel.” This collection is particularly special as it interacts with the viewer through color, guiding them to focus on the core emotions or states represented in each piece. The accompanying text on the artwork serves to enhance this experience, directing attention to the underlying message and feeling.

I am currently working on a new series called ‘The Language of Flowers.’ In this series, I aim to visually represent and convey the meaning and essence of each flower being observed. Each flower has its message, that viewers can see through the painting.

I’m also excited to announce an upcoming exhibition on November 22 in Lake Worth by the Cultural Council, titled “Quintessentially We,” where I will be presenting my piece “Breathe” from my “Closer” series. I can’t wait for this exhibition to share my painting with you.

I believe that art has the power to resonate on a deep level. And I strive to create works that encourage self-understanding.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

I believe the three most important qualities that have significantly impacted my artistic development are adaptability, self-understanding, and a commitment to continuous learning.

The art world is constantly evolving, as well as the world, and being open to change has allowed me to explore new techniques and styles. Embracing adaptability means being willing to experiment, take risks, and learn from failures. My advice for those early in their journey is to stay flexible and open-minded. Try different mediums, attend workshops, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Understanding and expressing emotions through art is crucial. Understanding and analyzing emotions enables me to connect deeply with my audience and convey feelings that resonate with them. When you are just at the beginning of your artistic way, I recommend taking time to reflect on your own emotions and experiences. Do more to help enhance self-awareness, which in turn can enrich your artistic expression.

Commitment to Continuous Learning: The pursuit of knowledge in art—whether through formal education, self-study, or mentorship. I’ve found that staying curious and seeking out new learning opportunities fuels creativity. My advice is to never stop exploring. Read books, follow online courses, and engage with other artists.

In summary, by cultivating adaptability, self-understanding, and a lifelong commitment to learning, emerging artists can develop their unique voice and navigate the ever-changing landscape of the art world more effectively.

As we end our chat, is there a book you can leave people with that’s been meaningful to you and your development?

If we are talking about art, there are some books, that influenced my artistic journey.
First up is “Sehen und Verstehen” by Gottfried Bammes. This book is like a treasure trove for understanding how to see and represent forms. Bammes has a knack for breaking down complex structures, which has really improved my ability to capture the human figure and other subjects. It’s all about sharpening your observational skills, and it’s been a great discovery for me.

Another must-read is Johannes Itten’s “Theory of Color.” This book dives into the emotional impact of color and how different shades interact.

And “Keys to Drawing” by Bert Dodson. This book is packed with practical exercises that are perfect for honing your drawing skills. Dodson really emphasizes the basics—like proportion, perspective, and light—which are strong foundations in artwork.

These books have been invaluable in my growth as an artist, and I highly recommend them to anyone looking to dive deeper into the world of art.
