Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Rachael Burns. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Rachael, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
I developed my resilience through a string of challenging events in my personal life. In 2018, my husband was diagnosed with aggressive brain cancer, right after we found out I was pregnant with twins. After surgery, chemo, and radiation, his health stabilized, but then I was hospitalized after experiencing serious complications when the twins were born.
Stuck in the hospital away from my babies, I had a lot of time to think about all of the things we had just been through. Even though our respective health problems were rare, I realized we were not unique. Everyone experiences hard things, and people are capable of overcoming almost anything. By reflecting on what I had already overcome, I felt brave facing future challenges, knowing that I could get through it.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a Certified Financial Planner and Certified Divorce Financial Analyst. I am passionate about empowering women through challenging life transitions like divorce or the death of a spouse.
I spent many years working as a ‘traditional’ financial advisor, but I decided to focus on newly single women after seeing the consequences of financial mistakes women made when they became single many years prior. I decided I wanted to reach these women earlier in their journey, to help them make the best decisions now and set themselves up for a secure financial future.
I am very excited to announce that I’ve recently launched my first book! It’s called “SOAR: Four Simple Steps To Confidently Manage Finances After Divorce.” It’s a quick and easy read for newly divorced women who are looking for guidance as they plan for their financial future. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
In order to be successful at any endeavor, you need to have passion. If you don’t have passion for what you’re working on, you’re going to lose momentum and fall short of your goals. I understand that not everyone has the luxury of choosing a career that brings them passion right away, but you can at least be passionate about making small incremental changes that get you closer to your ultimate goal.
You also need to have perseverance. Success doesn’t typically come quickly or easily, and you have to expect that there will be unexpected twists and turns in your journey. You have to decide that you are going to persevere no matter how hard it gets or what roadblocks you encounter.
Lastly, you need to be committed to constantly learning and growing. It will keep your brain active and healthy, and you will achieve far more than you think is possible if you never just accept that things are as good as they can be.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is a woman who finds herself suddenly single, after either a divorce or the death of her spouse. In addition to experiencing grief over the loss of her partner, she is also experiencing anxiety over the thought of being responsible for managing her own finances. Her spouse was always the one in charge of the money, and now she feels out of touch with her finances. She is completely overwhelmed and has no idea how to move forward.
This is my ideal client because it is exciting to see the transformation of someone who goes from a state of fear and stress to one of financial empowerment. By helping someone take charge of their financial situation, you can make a direct and tangible impact on their life.
