Meet Shailyn Ramsey

We recently connected with Shailyn Ramsey and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Shailyn, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Growing up, I struggled when it came to my confidence and self-esteem. I always felt like I was never good enough. I felt like if I couldn’t master something fast enough, I was never going to be able to do it. I went through many years of depression and therapy for me to finally feel like I was worth more than what I thought of myself at the time. People always would tell me that they wish they were confident like me but the reality was, I was not confident at all. Somehow, I gave off that persona but I believe it was because I never wore my heart on my sleeve. Nobody truly knew what I was going through but I always wanted to make sure it seemed like I was fine when I wasn’t.

As I grew older, I was able to experience life and figure out who I was. Through my many different experiences, it showed me who I am. It took me going through the worst of things and the best of things to see that I am Shailyn. It took me growing my relationship with God for me to understand why I was created and that there I have a purpose. My assignment here on earth is not for myself but to help those around me and the future generations to come.

I had to go through the worst for the best to blossom. I took any accomplishment as confirmation that I am doing exactly what I am supposed to do. It reassured me and gave me the confidence that I can accomplish anything I put my mind to. I had to realize that when we bad mouth ourselves, it is simply because we are not satisfied or do not like this version of ourself. It is up to us to make that change within us. I got tired of not being my best self so I made the conscious decision to change for me. I have to make sure I am good first so I can give my best to others. God gives us ideas for a reason. He knows that we are able to accomplish it. He chose us with purpose and that is how I knew I am worth so much more! Each and every single one of us are beautifully created!

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three qualities that have impacted my journey the most were to always be honest, hard-working, and resilient. I had to be honest with myself first and foremost. I made it appoint to always be my true and authentic self no matter what. Once you can be honest with yourself, it allows you to be honest to everyone else. In business, being honest has helped me secure a strong foundation in all the things I laid my hand on. You don’t have to worry of the burdens that come from faulty deals and relationships with others. I started my journey with all my savings depleted. Times got hard financially, mentally, physically, and emotionally. I worked two jobs while also trying to open a storefront. I stayed up everyday until two or three in the morning and would repeat the process everyday.

I love to work. I love to work for the things I want in life instead of it being handed to me. It brings me a higher satisfaction when I can look back and say to myself, “I did it.” I work hard because I know it will always pay off. I struggled starting off and I was very honest with those around me of my status and financial needs. You never know who’s willing to help you just from being open, honest, and transparent. You never know who is willing to help you especially when they can clearly see that you are self driven and motivated. Ever since COVID-19, there has been a lack in people who work hard. However, working hard is the very thing that is going to take you to the top. Most successful people worked hard for what they have today. I have big dreams so not giving my all in anything that I do is not going to get me where I want to be.

Being resilient helped me with the transitions of change. Change was occurring all around me as I was growing in my career and life. While looking for a building to run my business out of, I received a lot of no’s in the process. These no’s came in many different ways such as no to a loan, no to an investment partner, no to the building spaces and the list goes on. One thing I never did was give up. I may have gotten knocked down, but I got right back on my feet. I had a lot of surprise events happen but I never let that stop me. I did not let any setback stand in the way of my vision. I was given a plan and I knew one day I would make it happen one way or another.

Lastly, my best advice to anyone on their journey is to always be your true and authentic self. At the end of the day, what’s for you will always be for you. You are capable of anything you put your mind to but it starts with self. You have to be honest with yourself. If you don’t like who you are today, you have every will to change into a better version of you. Always work hard for the things you want because majority of the time, the good things do not come easy. To finish, resiliency will play a huge role in your journey. Remember that no hardship will last forever. It is temporary like the seasons. With knowing that, you can rest assured that great things lie ahead in your future. Keep pushing yourself through any obstacle that tries to get in the way and know that you will win in the end. When you know you gave it your all and treated people out of the goodness of your heart, you will overcome it all!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As a business owner, you have so much on your plate that life can become very overwhelming. It is a type of pressure that most don’t ever have to experience. Not only do you have to focus on your own personal life, you also have peoples lives on your hands. If you’re not careful, the overwhelmingness will overtake you. I have to make sure everything is running smoothly daily as well as make sure my own life is functioning properly. I had to learn how to effectively overcome the feeling of being overly exhausted.

Typically, whenever I feel overwhelmed, I remind myself to remain calm at all times. Getting worked up or getting stressed out will not resolve anything. I remind myself that I will always overcome whatever comes my way because of my faith in God. Praying keeps me at peace in knowing everything will be okay no matter what any situation looks like. Other times, I will also retract from the world. I spend at least 30 minutes to myself in silence with no distractions. I silence my phone and unplug from everyone. I also like to decompress by taking a nighttime drive, going to the beach or simply sitting in silence in the comfort of my own home.

I think it is also important to set healthy boundaries so you can mitigate the notion of feeling too overwhelmed. I used to overbook myself and overly extend myself for other people. What about me? Do not lose sight on yourself. You can only control what you do but you cannot control what others do. If you are not at ease, how can you function at your best? It is not possible. It is important that you make time for yourself and yes, I was horrible at doing this one point in time. Now, I make a conscious effort to always think about what is best for my welfare. I made an effort to take care of my body by changing to a healthier lifestyle, diet, and even removing myself from non-benefitting environments.

My advice would be to take a step back and evaluate what you have the power to change in any overwhelming situation. You are important and it’s imperative that you take care of you. Once you figure out who you are, you will realize the things that no longer serve you. You will begin to remove the very things that create that sense of uneasiness in your life. You will learn to no longer accept certain behaviors and actions because that affects your wellness. You will realize who you are and that no one can treat you any kind of way. Will you tackle the feeling of being overwhelmed or will you let it overcome you? Remember, you set the tone and you have the power to mitigate stressors in your life.
