We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Genevieve Jerome a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Genevieve, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I was raised by a mother who was extremely insecure and felt that bodyweight and body image were everything. Being a naturally curvy Italian woman, I decided I needed to find the confidence within me that my mother never had. I didn’t want to bring her insecurities with me into adulthood or have them go onto the next generation. I found confidence through working out, running, spending time in nature, belly dancing, and writing. All of those things shaped me into the person I am today.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a content creator and recipe developer which is wild for me to say. I never thought I would be an “influencer” but I’ve always loved acting and being on camera and speaking my mind, so this was a great way to bring all of that together. Mental health awareness is extremely important to me. I have ADHD and anxiety/OCD and having to navigate that in my thirties has been interesting, to say the least. I find the more I’m open about my mental health struggles, the more people are comfortable opening up about their daily struggles. I love talking and writing about mental health, but I also create recipes that can fuel our bodies. I write a recipe/mental healthy blog called: Fitty Foodlicious that encompasses all of those things. Fitness, mental wellness, and delicious food!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Persistence, positivity, and knowing your worth. If I could tell 2018 me what I knew now I could have saved myself a lot of heartache. This business can be very cutthroat. Know your worth! Know what you can offer people and what you deserve to make. Be confident in your ability to help people and own it! Being authentic and 100% myself has gotten me to where I am today. A positive mental attitude goes a long way too. Chin up and know your worth!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I garden! The garden is my sanctuary and my happy place. Gardening helps you live longer too and it’s wonderful for pollinators and wildlife. Start a garden! Even if you only have a patio, start there. You will be so much happier and the day-to-day issues and problems that life brings won’t be such a big deal. Garden, I promise you won’t regret it!
