We were lucky to catch up with Meg O’Leary recently and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Meg with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
From my parents and my upbringing. I grew up in a working class home with 4 siblings. My mom was a stay at home mom and my father the sole provider. He worked his way up a tradesman job to being a Director of Facilities at a university. I don’t think I realized it then, but looking back now the commitment and effort my dad put forth each day was a big influence in my upbringing. As young as 10 years old I was “working” not always for compensation but for experience. I loved horses growing up and if you don’t know it’s an expensive sport! Coming from a large family it was cost-prohibitive so I worked at the barn cleaning stalls, feeding the horses, helping with maintenance in exchange for lessons and opportunities to ride. I was thrilled to have the chance to just be at the barn, unknown to me that I was even working because after all it was my passion! It was little experiences like this that really shaped my drive. I’ve always had a thirst for working hard to achieve something myself and I hope to bring this forward to my kids like my parents did for me.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
A Restful Night is a sleep consulting firm supporting parents with children ages 0 to 5 years old. We are committed to empowering parents to teach their children how to sleep independently. We believe that every child can learn to sleep independently but it takes a plan that parents can be consistent and confident in … this is where we come in. We are a team of three sleep consultants all certified through the Center for Pediatric Sleep Management, We share the same philosophies on sleep training and are passionate about changing lives — because after all, sleep is everything! Our most popular program is the Two-Week Full Support Program. Parents who are consistently assisting their children to sleep by rocking, holding, feeding or laying with them are often experiencing disruptive nights because their child lacks the skill to do it. Our program designs a plan to support your child in learning this on their own to help them consolidate their nights and get more restful, restorative sleep. We focus not just on the “method” but on all the surrounding elements that help sleep training have long lasting results. We’ll teach you how to have a predictable, soothing bedtime routine, how to get your child onto a great daytime schedule, how to improve your infant’s feeding and more. Not every family needs this heavy level of support, some parents just seek out our schedule advice which can be downloaded from the website. https://www.arestfulnight.com/downloads
We’ve helped over 1000 families and look forward to growing the impact we can have.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
So much of my past career has impacted my success and my journey.
1. Business Knowledge & Marketing Experience: Before becoming an entrepreneur I spent 15 years as a marketing executive at American Express. During this time I held a number of different roles everything from relationship management, lead generation, product development and customer marketing. This experience and the knowledge I gained have been instrumental in how I have launched and manage my business. I lean on my experience each day as I think about how to launch programs or try different marketing tactics.
2. Experience as a Parent: Without a doubt, this is what makes me successful. As a mom of 4, I’ve seen and have experienced A LOT. I draw on my parenting experiences daily as I work with families. It’s also the passion and drive behind what I do. I see how much work it is to manage and care for a family of 6 each day and there is no way I could do it without being well rested. This is what drives me each day to help families — I want parents to see that getting your family predictable, reliable and consistent sleep can be a game changer!
3. Coach: Working at American Express gave me the opportunity to lead large global teams virtually across the world. I was responsible not only in helping these teams meet their business goals but also in coaching the individuals. This has helped me tremendously as a parent coach — it’s never a one size fits all and you need to be able to flex your style, and find different ways to connect with your families to make an impact — I draw on this experience all the time!
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
As a business owner, sleep consultant, mother, wife and friend I am pulled in different directions all day long. It’s easy to get overwhelmed and honestly happens fairly frequently. Whenever I’m feeling these overwhelmed thoughts creep in I first make a list – I work through all the things that are adding to the anxiety in my head and then I prioritize them. The bigger things I try to break into a first step and then I’ll add them to my project management tool (Asana) which helps my brain keep track of everything! I’ll then time block several days ahead and each day pick a top 3 to focus on. Usually if I can start to tackle a few things and feel accomplished it gives me some of that relief to be able to tackle all the other things with reduced anxiety. I also try to remember that being a parent is about juggling and the most important thing is sometime to realize which ball is the glass one and how to just make sure that one doesn’t drop. At the end of the day I’m only human and there are things that are just not going to get done — and I have to be okay with that!
