We were lucky to catch up with Jade Alexandria recently and have shared our conversation below.
Jade, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
I come from a very grounded family and upbringing both of my parents instilled in me to never give up and that there is always a way. My mama always says ” I’m never down, I’m either up or getting up.” and that lives in my mind rent-free. I’ve been down many times and often I’m down more than up but I’m never out.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a professional burlesque performer and actress. Everything I love is films and Old Hollywood. So, I created my modern version of that lifestyle. I’m a classic burlesque performer for those who don’t know what that is, I describe it as a theatrical strip tease. It’s much more than a regular strip tease, burlesque tells a story like a Broadway musical with the same amazing music and the best part for me are the elaborate costumes.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Well, this is a relatively new journey for me I’ve been performing for two years now and I love it. The first quality that has helped me is being open to the process and embracing it. Burlesque came at a time in my life when I was down and had little self-confidence. I took my mentor’s an amazing course, her name is Kim Bustible and her course is called “Showcase Your Unique Self”. It was nine weeks of getting to know who I was through this art form. It wasn’t easy but being open to it and saying Jade we are going to get through this and you are not going to quit was how I became a performer.
The second skill for me that I say is my superpower is networking. You have to be willing to put yourself out there and collaborate with people and get to know individuals. Go to events, where your best outfit, shake hands, and present yourself boldly. That is how I’ve gotten everything I have so far.
Lastly, know your BRAND! This one takes time but social media is your best tool and your brand is how people know who you are and if they want to work with you. So, know what you stand for, know your aesthetic, and know that your brand is always evolving.
Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My ideal clients are hotels, upscale restaurants, and bars. My goal is to have my own residency and put on the most glamourous show possible for Nashville.
