Meet Ruya Jesani

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Ruya Jesani. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Ruya , we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?

I have made it my mission to keep the promises I make to myself. During the lockdown, I chose to invest in my well-being and prepare myself for a brighter future. At first, I was stuck in a cycle of low self-esteem, lacking both direction and self-awareness. I had no real goals and hadn’t yet discovered the power of knowing what you truly want to achieve. So, I started small. Whether it was waking up early, moving my body, or learning something new, I committed to taking action because that’s where real growth begins. By showing up for myself in these small, consistent ways, I built a foundation of trust and saw my confidence bloom. Over time, these daily actions led to powerful transformation, unlocking a sense of purpose and self-belief I never knew I had

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

I have always felt deeply self-motivated, and I’m passionate about sharing this spark with others through social media. I believe that seeing someone make positive changes in their life has a contagious effect—it inspires us to strive for more. For me, creating content is all about creating to inspire. That’s why I launched my wellness account, @grow.with.ruya, with a vision to encourage people to embrace self-development in every way possible.

When I began posting consistently, I received heartfelt messages from people, even from old classmates who barely recognized me and were amazed by my transformation. Their words affirmed that I’m on the right path. Change is inevitable, and when it’s for the better, it becomes the foundation of who we aspire to be. If I can spark that in others, then my mission is fulfilled.

On my page, I share insights from what I read, what I eat, my self-love practices, my workout routines, and my life as an international student majoring in Business Management in Los Angeles. Balancing studies with a tutoring job on campus, I offer a window into my journey of growth, hoping to motivate others through the habits I live by.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three qualities that have profoundly shaped my journey are unwavering self-belief, steadfast perseverance, and a commitment to taking action. It all starts with believing in myself, followed by the courage to act.

As a child, I faced challenges in school and endured bullying from classmates who claimed I wasn’t as bright as they were. Yet, I soon realized that I was competing against the wrong people. The only person I truly needed to compete with was myself. I made it my mission to focus on my growth day in and day out. Through this process, I cultivated a blind trust in my abilities, supported by consistent action, which ultimately led me to become the best version of myself. The challenges I have overcome have transformed into invaluable strengths on this journey.

For anyone seeking to transform their life for the better, it’s essential to cultivate a profound belief in themselves, always backed by purposeful action. Remember, the only person you need to prove anything to is yourself.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

My parents never imposed their expectations on me; instead, they provided unwavering support in all my endeavors. Because their encouragement came from a place of love rather than obligation, I developed a genuine curiosity for learning and a desire to excel in school. I often shared my dreams and aspirations with my dad, who listened intently and played a crucial role in helping me recognize my potential. Their blind trust in me enabled me to trust myself.

In 10th grade, I faced a challenge when my tutor had to leave due to scheduling conflicts. I confided in my dad about my fears, especially since, in India, the 10th and 12th grades have board exams that are incredibly important—akin to the SATs in America. My dad reassured me, saying, ‘Don’t worry, I believe you can handle this on your own.’ And that’s exactly what happened. I scored 84% in my 10th grade, and by continuing to study independently, I achieved 91% in 12th grade. It felt effortless because I approached my studies with a calm mindset, fully immersed in the joy of learning.

Parents play an essential role in shaping our perspective, helping us navigate any situation with clarity and confidence.

In addition to my parents’ influence, two books have profoundly shaped my journey: the autobiography of Abdul Kalam and Atomic Habits by James Clear. Both have become guiding forces in my life, much like parental figures that inspire personal growth.

Abdul Kalam’s autobiography was one of the first books I read, and it left a lasting impression on me. His deep love for knowledge and insatiable curiosity inspired me to pursue learning relentlessly. His journey serves as a reminder of the importance of asking questions and seeking knowledge, which parallels the nurturing environment my parents created.

Similarly, Atomic Habits emphasizes the power of small, consistent actions in transforming our lives. This idea reflects the unwavering support my parents provided, nurturing my self-belief and encouraging me to strive for excellence. It’s a book that I believe everyone should read at least once, as it clearly illustrates how we can develop positive habits step by step.

Together, these books instill essential values of self-belief and curiosity, shaping my perspective and guiding me toward becoming the person I aspire to be.
