Meet Georgia Jones

We recently connected with Georgia Jones and have shared our conversation below.

Georgia , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I credit my work ethic to several different factors. Growing up, my parents were incredible role models who instilled a strong work ethic in me. I watched them work hard every single day for our family, and they always pushed me to do the same. As a kid, I played sports year round. After quitting sports, I got a minimum wage job to save up to buy my first camera. I asked anyone and everyone if they would let me take photos of them just to get practice behind the camera. I said yes to almost everything, which could be overwhelming at times, but led to great connections and taught me a lot of lessons. I’ve always lived a busy life, and the only way to make it through was to work hard.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a freelance photographer and student. I work at Louisiana State University as a Student Athletics Photographer while simultaneously getting a degree in chemistry. During my time at LSU, I’ve gotten to photograph some of the most iconic athletes and games in the school’s history, including the Women’s Basketball National Championship and the Gymnastic’s National Championship. I am constantly pushing to bring a new perspective to sports photography and create photos that stand out. I also create videos that show behind the scenes of a collegiate sports photographer and giving advice to those aspiring to do the same thing. While I photograph a lot of sports, I also do everything from senior portraits to engagement photos to parties.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The three most important qualities when starting out as any sort of photographer are:

1. Perseverance: This is not an easy job, especially when you first start. You will fail and get frustrated, but you have to keep pushing. Take any chance you can to get behind the camera.

2. Great Communication: Whether you’re working with clients or other professionals in the field, communication is key. Get comfortable with taking feedback, ask questions, and collaborate with others as much as you can.

3. Individuality: When starting out, new photographers tend to find a photographer they love and mimic their style. This can be a great way to get ideas and push yourself out of your comfort zone, but you need to establish your own brand. Find a lane that works for you and run with it. There are so many photographers out there so figure out how you will distinguish yourself from the others.

What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?

My biggest area of growth over the last year has been my confidence in myself. Initially, I often second-guessed my abilities and hesitated to share my work. However, I made a conscious effort to push past those self-doubts. I also sought feedback from peers and mentors, which provided valuable insights and reassured me about my progress. Hearing others’ experiences also made me realize that self-doubt is common, and many have overcome it. Additionally, I’ve embraced challenges by experimenting with different styles and techniques. Each time I try something new, whether that be shooting from a different angle or trying new techniques in photoshop, I feel a sense of accomplishment that boosts my confidence. While I recognize that I still have room for improvement, I’ve become more comfortable in my skin as a photographer. I now approach shoots with a greater sense of assurance and creativity, which I believe has positively impacted my work. I’m excited to continue this journey, pushing my boundaries and growing in confidence with each new project.
