Meet Kai Calhoun

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kai Calhoun. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kai below.

Kai , so great to be with you and I think a lot of folks are going to benefit from hearing your story and lessons and wisdom. Imposter Syndrome is something that we know how words to describe, but it’s something that has held people back forever and so we’re really interested to hear about your story and how you overcame imposter syndrome.

Honestly I’m just now starting to overcome imposter syndrome. I think because I’m working in professional environments and I’m often the youngest in the room it can kind of feel like you don’t belong. I realized this idea that “I didn’t belong” wasn’t true and learned to be open to collaboration. I discovered that if you approach a project with good energy and the ability to collaborate, most times others will reciprocate that energy.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am the owner of Beyond The Skai Productions, which is a video & photo production company based in Los Angeles, California. What makes what we do so fun is the fact that no 2 days are the same. We work with such a wide range of customers that one day we could be shooting a short film, and the next day we could be providing photography for a museum. This along with the general upkeep of running a business has taught me how to manage several different aspects at once.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

The ability to pivot, be solution based, and taking/creating opportunities that will challenge you is the advice I would give to anyone looking to start a business. People and things change all the time but the ability to pivot and be solution based is a quality that I find people generally appreciate and is often what makes people call you back to work again. You could focus on all the things going wrong, but it won’t fix your issues, instead try and think “whats the next option?” Putting yourself out there and creating opportunities sounds so simple but sometimes we have that imposter syndrome. Something as small as talking to the creative director of a company, and letting them know what your business is capable of doing for their business can land you to your next big opportunity.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?

I’m always looking for folks to collaborate with. There are so many different aspects to running a creative business and I don’t know everything and am still learning myself. I’m looking for people who do creative work in the media business (Photography, Text, Photoshop, Cinematographers, Director of photography, writers, Videographers) and truly enjoy the process of making an idea come to life. The best way to reach us if your interested in collaborating or working with us is through email: Beyondtheskaiprod@gmail.com.
