We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kenyatta Hudson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenyatta , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
I developed my confidence and self-esteem by focusing on myself and not what others are doing around me, I became my own competition. My goal is to be a better me by the day, a lot of meditation and prayer was also involved with this, on the other hand, I had to put in my own work as well. Meaning, fighting my own demons and past trauma, knowing that’s what makes me who I am. Choosing to Let it bring out the best of me and not the worst. I had to understand that it takes confidence and great self-esteem to even be able to present myself to people. When it comes to confidence, people can smell it on you like dogs. When you don’t have that, It makes people question you and with the type of business that I do, I can’t be questioned. I need people to be comfortable and trust me, when it comes to my business. When you are confident, no one questions you, you also won’t question yourself. Confidence and a great self-esteem attracts the right people to you.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an all around entrepreneur and it was a journey getting here. Lots of 9 to 5s used as stepping stools to get where I am and because I’m never content I’m still not where I want to be, but I’m grateful. My gratefulness and hard work prepares me for my next journey and new blessings. My first love is hair, I’ve been doing hair since I could remember. It’s not only an art, but it is a gift. Being able to satisfy someone with a look and not only that, a transformation. It makes me happy seeing other people happy. My clients aren’t just here to get a new look, but they are able to vent to me when they can’t to others. I’m an ear to listen to, I take away peoples pain and stress. When they leave my chair they leave rejuvenated ready to take on whatever they need to take on. Everything you do will be work, but enjoying what you do is the key, happiness is success. I found myself just being a creative person all the way around rather it be hair, painting, cooking, music, or tattoos. I like to call myself the MASTER of all trades, because I like to tap into all the gifts God has given me and perfect it and I won’t stop until it’s reached a level of satisfaction. I’m always hungry for more, if I find interest in something I tap into it. All of these things are ways to show the world who Kenyatta is. I am currently working on a few music projects at the moment, I’d like to say I am at tier 1 when it comes to that. Developing myself as an artist when it comes to music (back to that perfection) so that I am prepared to share that with the world. My music is the best way to explain who I am, tell people about my past, my present, and different things that run through my head. It’s awesome to get the reactions and seeing how many people can relate to you. I’m a really private person, so music leaves room for transparency. I’ve always felt misunderstood as a person, when I got in tune with my musical side it turned into a path for me to explain myself with no interruptions. Painting is something I do here and there, it is a way to express myself on a more personal level, it’s just me, the paint, and the brush. I don’t sell my art, but I have and open to doing so. Cooking is something I’ve enjoy even as a small child. I remember my mom having the family over and I created a whole menu all the way down to dessert. I pretended to be a waitress, took orders etc. I even had different food options to choose from lol. Eventually I started my own catering business as I got older. I tend to hop around my talents, but I always come back, so I don’t leave any crumbs. I’m the definition of a one stop shop. I enjoy serving people, but I also enjoy hustling and finding new ways to make money. A lot of people go to college to get multiple things under their belt, I like to have all of my crafts under mine. There’s nothing that I can’t do if I truly want to do it. I feel like my best gift is making people happy, so everything that I do I provide the best service to get the job done, so that whoever I am working with is satisfied. I had to find another way to please people that could be beneficial to myself as well. You can’t pour into people leaving your cup empty.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The main quality is consistency, you will never finish if you are not consistent. You also have to be sure that you are always open to learn, there is not one person that you can’t learn from, whether it be positive or negative. I took everything and turned it into a positive. I made the decision not to get stuck in my way so that I am open to learn throughout this journey. The best advice I can give people is to never give up, put your best foot forward, manifest the things that you want while also putting the work in. The only thing you can get out of hard work is success! There will be obstacles along the journey and it most likely won’t happen when YOU want it too, but that’s where the “not giving up” part comes from. Even when you feel like people are not believing in you, there’s always someone that does, so appreciate those who do, even if it’s one person. Also understand that support comes in MANY ways, rather it be someone just simply telling you to “KEEP GOING”! At the end of the day the most important thing is believing in yourself, trusting yourself that you will get yourself to your destiny, trusting God, having faith, knowing that when you do your part, God will do his part. Remember I am that I am!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
My foundation is my mother Angela who showed me independence and financial knowledge, my father Glenn who always installed in my head that I am a leader and to never give up, & my auntie Alecia who never judges me and gives me a safe space to tell her ANYTHING. They ALL never gave up on me, they always believed in me, and they always comfort me in my time of need. When I can’t run to anyone else, they all gave me a different ear to listen, so that if I didn’t feel comfortable telling one something, I have the other to go to. However, I have ran into many people, even people that I do not know (younger & older) that have provided me with different skills, qualities and knowledge. When they say “it takes a Village!” It definitely does. I have been blessed enough to have a village. I am surrounded by a lot of people that believe in me and inspire me. My biggest inspiration is my uncle Maurice…. Watching him walking in Faith and not by sight is something a lot of people do not and will not do, nor do they understand. I was also blessed with people that came later in my life as well that believe and me and I am forever grateful for them. The most high ALWAYS bless me with the right people and in the right timing to help keep me going. So, if I’m ever discouraged it doesn’t last long.
