We were lucky to catch up with Desirée Nicole recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Desirée, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I got my work ethic from my beautiful mother. As the oldest, the relationship started as just the two of us. I remember crying so hard being left with my grandma when she had to work. As I got older, I realized how much she sacrificed her happiness to ensure my siblings and I were always good. Now that I’m able to work, I work hard too. In the process, I always try to do things to show her how much I appreciate her and the things she has done.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
After recently moving back to NYC from South Korea, where I worked as an English teacher, I felt compelled by God to take a leap of faith and pursue content creation full-time. It’s a scary process, but I’m glad I decided to do it! I felt like every experience in my career has led me to this point. I’ve worked in the fashion, music, and literature industry. Just about anything I put my mind to, I did it. But I was always the one behind the cameras. I never wanted to be seen.
It’s true what people say though, the older you get the less you care. Now that I’m older, I’ve decided not to hide anymore. With my niche being skincare and K-beauty, I have to be seen. I remember being at a K-beauty event this past March having imposter syndrome. I felt like I didn’t belong. That was such a pivotal moment for me because it opened my eyes. It was like something clicked, I suddenly needed to be “perfect”. My face was my brand. Living in South Korea where plastic surgery and looks are a top priority had me thinking, did I need plastic surgery? I felt crumby about feeling this way for a few days but as always, God had to remind me that He called me to my platform for a reason. Authenticity always wins. Slow and steady always wins the race. He created me in His image too!
Since then, I’ve always put my best foot forward. Stay true to yourself and stay in your lane! People see you already, just keep showing up (this is for me and for those reading this!)
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that have impacted my journey would have to be: copywriting, video editing, and filmography/photography. I used these skills when I was an active music journalist for K-pop-related news sites. Copywriting has helped me tremendously with scripts for videos that I create, video editing is necessary as a content creator and filmography/photography helps me with capturing the right angles!
When it comes to advice for people who are early in their journey, like I mentioned earlier, stay true to yourself and stay in your lane! People see you already, just keep showing up! It’s okay to go through trial and error too. It’s all apart of the learning experience.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I usually take a week off from work or if deadlines are too close, I pray for strength and peace to keep pushing. My advice is to focus on the things you like doing that uplift you. For me, I love watching Twilight. It’s my guilty pleasure!
