We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Myrdith Leon-McCormack a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Myrdith, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I had to tell myself that this isn’t about just me, it isn’t about my vanity or need for attention. But It is an incredible opportunity to be able to dispel myths about the negative perception of Black & Brown people. I feel honored that I can lead the way with my publication that highlights the beauty and contributions of Black and Brown people in the wedding, lifestyle, and travel spaces.
Our work shines a light on diverse stories and perspectives that often go underrepresented in the industry. Our dedication to showcasing these voices and narratives is truly inspiring and undoubtedly making a significant impact in the wedding and event space. We’re not just creating a pretty and superficial magazine; we’re building a platform for inclusivity and representation.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I would say I am a creative, marketing storyteller. I would like to think I am a creative soul. I love storytelling, history, learning about the past, and planning hopefully for a brighter future. Therefore the opportunity to be visually creative through the pages of World Bride Magazine to tell stories of love, family, and communities around the world is a dream come true. Being able to hire people I like, and respect who have the same vision, and mission to show the beauty in the world is a privilege I don’t take for granted. World Bride Magazine was created in a time when very few Black people were considered beautiful and used as representatives for major global brands, let alone in the luxury space. Yes, there have been a few here and there, but generally speaking Black beauty was not the first to be celebrated. It was an afterthought or a token. Or labeled as a niche market that wasn’t deserving of the same funding or investments as the general population–other races and ethnicities. So instead of forcing myself into someone else’s space, I created my own world with people who have the same vision and see the world as a garden filled with a variety of different flowers deserving to be admired and celebrated.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Dedicated/Committed (If I commit to something, it is as good as done.)
Hardworking
Loyal
Know your strengths and your weaknesses and face them head-on. Surround yourself with people who are where you want to be, who are doing good in the world for humanity. Stay focused even when folks doubt you.
Find the right mentor who will challenge you and be honest with you and help you grow to be a better person.
It is ok to start when you are not ready–circumstances will make you ready. Remember you can’t control every situation, that is when your trust in God will have to kick in and take you the rest of the way. When people let you down The Almighty will take you the rest of the way.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Accepting people for who they are and not forcing my dreams and desires for them on them, even if I think it is for their benefit. You can’t want more for others than they want for themselves. I had to accept that and be ok with it and not feel like I needed to save everyone.
I have learned to travel alone, stop questioning my decisions, and take bold risks to reach my ultimate goals.
