Meet Gabriela Flores Morales

We recently connected with Gabriela Flores Morales and have shared our conversation below.

Gabriela , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Creativity is a learned skill; just like other learned skills, it gets better with practice. I am a maker; making and engaging with different projects is what gives me joy and makes me get out of bed in the morning. The more I make and the more I solve different challenges with the projects I engage with, the more I feel I have the creative skill set for new projects. For me, it is all about doing and getting my hands dirty.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am a product designer who recently finished my MA at the Royal College of Arts. I have a brand called Prieta (@prieta.mx). I have a passion for products and creating ceramic objects. My next exhibition will be alongside other talented designers and makers at London Design Week in September 2023.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The three most important qualities for me on my designer journey have been: Curiosity, I like to think of myself as a curious individual. I like to know how objects are made and explore the possibilities of different materials. Being curious and observant about the world around me allows me to explore materials and processes differently.
Part of being a maker and a product designer is being willing to fail and not being an expert. For one object or process that comes out right, I made many iterations and experiments that failed; it is part of the process. Not only is failing part of the creative process, but it sometimes provides unexpected results that lead to new ideas.
The most important one that might be redundant is just to work. Continue working even when things are not going as planned. Prieta, as well as my career as a designer, is just a constant work in progress, and if I want to take it any further, it will be a constant work in progress.

Looking back over the past 12 months or so, what do you think has been your biggest area of improvement or growth?
Patience and acceptance: my life has been in constant change over the past two years, and the last 12 months have been no exceptions. Changing countries, adapting to different cultures, ways of thinking, weather, and feeling home sick I gained patience and acceptance in the uncertainty of life, accepting that I cannot control many things but can control my attitude towards change.
