Meet Matt Covington

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Matt Covington. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Matt, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?

Finding my purpose of educating my community on financial fundamentals and how accessible preparing your family financially can be, was not linear.

My parents have always been hardworking, supportive and provided a stable upbringing for myself and my four siblings. Dad retired from over thirty years of working as an engineer and Mom always exemplified frugal responsibility. Before serving a mission for my church, I met the founder of our company, Mike Wilk, at a financial education event that we actually still host today.

Speaking to my parents about my learnings at the event opened my eyes to the purpose I have now. My parents did not know the financial principles I learned and neither did our friends and family. After my church mission, I pursued a career in the oil industry, but ran into Mike a decade after our original meeting and he invited me to look into becoming a Financial Services Professional for all the benefits it would provide to my future family.

Since making the jump to Five Rings Financial full time almost five years ago, I have educated hundreds of clients and enabled dozens of agents on basic financial tools and how they are not exclusive to the already wealthy. My personal purpose has shifted from not only providing for my own family, but helping families from all backgrounds realize their access to financial possibilities and put them into action.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

At Five Rings Financial, we focus on financial education and help our clients with “safe money” solutions to protect and/or grow their money.

We are especially passionate about Living Benefits, the powerful feature of our life insurance policies that enable clients to use their life insurance benefits while they’re still alive. If clients qualify and are diagnosed with an applicable medical condition or circumstance, he/she is able to use a portion of their death benefit (completely tax-free!) to help in their time of need. Not only are medical expenses one of the biggest causes of bankruptcy and Living Benefits can prevent this, this feature also allows clients and their families to focus on healing and recovering versus financial hardship. My wife and I both have people we love who have been affected by cancer and disabilities, and unfortunately we have witnessed them struggle physically, emotionally, and financially without ever learning about the power of Living Benefits.

Another avenue we help clients with is tax-free retirement and cash accumulation. From our “Million Dollar Baby” plan to helping people make plans to save later in life when they fear their window has closed, we are independent agents putting our clients and the right products for their unique circumstances first.

We host monthly financial education events, including Money 101, both in-person and virtually as a way to introduce people to our company and what we do with zero pressure or obligation.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Looking back, the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in my journey thus far, have been purpose, resilience, and humility.

Being an entrepreneur requires enough purpose to be constantly energized, even when it is inevitable there will be hard days. Knowing my clients will be protected in the face of potential tragedy keeps me going in the pursuit of ensuring everyone knows what is available to them that could potentially provide peace during unpredictable times. That purpose is my most used tool in building my agency, remembering my “why” amongst the grind.

Though purpose keeps me energized, building my resiliency has allowed me to not let downturns in my journey affect me long enough to impact my business. The majority of my time is interacting with people, and as long as you know you put your best foot forward, responding to negative interactions with professionalism and empathy is a key to resilience.

In my mission to help as many households as possible, humility has allowed me to gain credibility with some of the most cynical audiences. You have to be humble to be a good listener and that is vital to providing the right financial service for each unique financial situation.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

We are always looking for people to connect with and more importantly, partner with.

Partnering with other independent agents in other industries allows us to not only provide our services to their current customer base, but also becomes an optional career opportunity for those agents that could potentially complement their existing professional expertise.

Power Partners we have been able to help exponentially with both referrals and professional advancements include property and casualty (P&C) insurance agents, realtors, mortgage brokers, small business owners, accountants, and legal professionals.

We are also able to customize our Money 101 events to private events for teams, groups, or co-hosting with other educational events.
