We recently connected with Izabella Cura and have shared our conversation below.
Izabella, thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?
I have always been told I am a fairly optimistic person, but honestly speaking, that wasn’t always the case.
A couple years ago, a friend had said that I complain too much. It didn’t feel great to hear, but I realized she was right. Thanks to her, I began thinking of ways to complain less. Adopting the “cup half-full” mindset, it didn’t take long for me to set out on a journey of self-improvement. Every day, I tried practicing an attitude of gratitude, ascertaining that I truly have the power to make positive impacts in both my life and in the lives of others, from gestures both big and small.
By reminding myself to appreciate life as I live it, I developed a solid sense of optimism. Things can always be better or worse, but at the end of the day, we are the ones who decide how we will react to whatever might happen in our lives.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Currently, I am majoring in film, as I aspire to direct and produce works of my own.
As a child, I had always found myself drawn to the arts. My family has never quite understood this, and thus attempted to ingrain their ideas of a “stable” occupation into my mind. Yet even when I was in blatant denial of my passions, I always managed to feed my creative spirit.
From drawing in secret, taking as many arts-related courses as possible in school, and spending a hefty chunk of time consuming entertainment-related media, I was completely hooked. Even my career counselor commented that a creative field seemed more suitable for me to pursue, but I was still in denial and could not comprehend the idea of actually pursuing a career in film. Once I finally realized I had the power to achieve my dreams, nothing could dissuade me anymore.
All that being said, I love film and the filmmaking process. Good films, bad films, obscure films, and classics…. each one tells a unique story. I’ll never tire of watching them, as there is just so much that film has to offer. Of course, I also aim towards sharpening my storytelling skills, and connecting with like-minded creative individuals in order to draw out their true potential.
One important thing to remember is that there will always be an abundance of opportunities, and I believe you just need to keep looking until you find what works best for you.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
One skill I believe was crucial towards my self-development is communication. Being able to communicate well is an art of its own. I found that being able to express my thoughts not only clearly and precisely, but in a way that is relatively easy for others to understand, has allowed me to go much farther in life than I would have otherwise.
In addition to good communication, a little empathy goes a long way! You never quite realize how much of an impact you have on those around you; empathy is especially important in today’s world where we have become so disconnected from each other. A kind act or genuine compliment can make someone’s day, and being able to put yourself in another person’s shoes helps us feel more connected as well.
I find helping others fulfilling, because I am able to see for myself what an impact being positive can have. Not only that, but being empathetic allows me to better appreciate how we each have our own personal challenges to overcome in life.
Another quality that doesn’t hurt to have is being able to self-promote. Invisibility isn’t a superpower; if you don’t advocate for yourself, who will? Let your confidence in your abilities shine through, and people will come to respect you more for it, as you allow yourself to be seen and heard.
My advice to improve these skills is to be patient with yourself and keep trying! There’s an abundance of resources available online regarding communication, empathy, and self-promotion. I believe these are all key components of working with others, which will assist greatly regardless of the path you choose.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always open and willing to meet new people, especially when it comes to creative endeavors in film, photography, and beyond. Right now my focus is directing and video editing, though I also have experience in various branches of performing arts, such as singing and acting.
Anyone interested in collaboration can reach me preferably through my email, or social media. I look forward to connecting with fellow creatives!
