Meet Greg Stone

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Greg Stone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Greg below.

Greg , appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?

It can get pretty monotonous creating content, especially in the golf space. Trying to remain curious and creative when the algorithm doesn’t reward outside the box creativity as much as whatever current trends are is difficult. One of the things I do to remain creative is to actually take a step back and just count the blessings. If I take a look at where I started, content wise, and where I’m at now, its hard NOT to put a smile on when seeing how far i’ve come. so having a healthy amount of gratitude is key.

For golf specifically, I will go and play either a solo round or a round with some friends and leave ALL of the camera stuff at home. MAYBE record 1-2 videos with the phone but otherwise, be in the moment with them on course and remember why i got started doing this in the first place. The ITCH to get back and start planning, editing, and arranging fun opportunities will reignite the passion that’s already there but maybe a little more dormant than usual.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

Under the moniker Backswing Banter, I try to capture and convey my genuine passion for the game of golf and sharing it with everyone i can! my favorite part about the whole thing is the community i find myself in. Being able to grow with a community of awesome human beings that all care about golf as much as I have found i do is a blessing.

A proof of how amazing this community has been showed itself during a recent content series I put together. I called it Gift of Golf and I gifted a friend an entire golf bag full of gear that was donated by multiple brands I’ve worked with. over $1500 worth of gear including a full club set, golf bag itself, range finder, clothing, accessories, shoes, etc. Everyone who jumped in donating did so with no hesitation and It literally brought me to tears. The support of this community is everything.

I am just one of many San Diego based golf creators but I do feel as a group of individuals coming together to make entertaining, educational, and generally exciting content is something special you don’t see often!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Persistence, passion, and curiosity. these 3 things are essential in my book to be able to power through most of, if not all, challenges doing content creation poses. To make the most engaging content you can takes a lot of energy and persistence. Its an ever-evolving skill you must continue to hone over time. You don’t start out making 1M view videos at the beginning.

Passion is VERY important. If you don’t have at least a little passion for what you’re trying to do, its not going to be easy to be persistent and curious through the lows and challenges you will inevitably face. The late Steve Job’s said, “You have to have a lot of passion for what you do because it is so hard. if you don’t, any rational person would quit” Such a powerfully simple concept that applies directly to the pursuit of success or progress in content creation.

One of the things I tell everybody who asks about how to start creating content: Lead with genuine curiosity. That is my number 1 goal in anything i do. I believe that if your content is based around continuous growth and learning by staying curious, It will translate across the screen in your content and draw more people in!

The “content game”, much like a lot of things, is a game of attrition half the time. As long as you can stay consistent with creating and posting the best content you can, you will literally outlast your “competition”.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I am always looking for more people/brands to collaborate with! I try to put out content that is engaging, either informative or entertaining, and relaxed. Its a gift to be able to do what i do with golf and I try to share that feeling of gratitude with my audience.

Golf Brands: I’m always surprised by the amount of small brands starting their journey in the golf scene and that number grows every day. If I can provide value for their audience with my content and creativity, I’m all about it! So, up and coming golf brands, please get in touch via email or Instagram so we can chat! always up for helping showcase brand’s stories any way I can.
