We were lucky to catch up with Theresa Porter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Theresa, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
In terms of resilience, I feel like it was a necessity growing up. It was a very ‘sink or swim’ childhood I experienced. My life was definitely not the easiest. it wasn’t the hardest but it most definitely wasn’t the easiest. I just always had to keep going. No one would pick up the pieces or pull me along if I faltered. I had no guidance and no helping hand. I just had to figure it out. Some days I question myself regarding what I have been able to achieve. I’m proud of myself, and what I’ve accomplished, and I have learned to give myself grace in the areas where I did fumble.
I grew up in a very dysfunctional home. There was a lot of abuse and a lot of poverty. I remember being a little girl and stealing food to eat and clothes for warmth in the winter. As tough as this sounds, it taught me so much that I am so grateful for. It’s where my lessons in resilience began.
Being a single mom was a whole other direction. It was a new level of resilience. One where my failures would be felt not just by me but by those beautiful little faces that looked to me for protection and provision. I learned quickly during those times that failure was not an option and that success could be the only outcome. I had them relying on me and I wasn’t going to let them down.
For me, resilience was formed by a life of self-reliance and a constant reminder that failure wasn’t an option. I reminded myself all the time why I was setting the goals I had. My biggest flaw though was not allowing space for me to be a constant ‘work in progress’ and I had always been on the quest for perfection in all I did. I wanted the approval that I had never received. I would greatly beat myself up mentally when I didn’t get the confirmation I so desperately wanted. I had to learn that true resilience is not just continuing and marching through the toughest of times but also being able to continue and allow space for grace in the moments where success seems far and unachievable.
The biggest lesson I could share in terms of resilience would be that we need to understand that resilience isn’t about perfection or running yourself dry. It’s not about the approval or accolades. I’ve been here and I did it. It never turns out the way you think it will in your mind if the desire isn’t pure and true and I can promise that. We need to make sure we are celebrating our successes and filling our own cups when needed. We need to be clear about our goals and why we want to achieve them. If the answer isn’t that it’s for you, the end goal will always feel empty. Be clear. Be focused. Be driven for all the right reasons.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Where I am now all started with my abilities. I left my corporate job and have jumped into establishing my own business that utilizes my psychic mediumship to help people along their path for the highest good. I have a variety of abilities from connecting with past loved ones, energy work and healing, general questions, clearing attachments or hauntings, blessings, and many others like helping companies achieve success.
I have a published book, Guided: Life-long self-awareness techniques to raise your vibration and bring you more joy. The book is exactly that, tools to help you define your life by breaking down the many aspects by utilizing easy-to-implement techniques. This book was a channeled project that I am so very proud of!
From there I started my self-titled podcast where I speak to individuals from many different walks of life to share what they have learned and also express what joy is to them. The goal is to help share useful information and to bring a spotlight on joy and how it is different for everyone.
I have recently started providing a monthly email update on what I all have going on in the current month. Those interested can send me an email to [email protected] if they would like to be added. I only send it out on the first of the month to let everyone know what booking openings, events, courses, and other options I have available. I take time to write this out myself and greatly enjoy taking this time away to focus and share.
I am also starting to work on remote events as It was requested by individuals outside of the areas I have hosted so far. I’m excited to see how this all turns out and where it leads. Tickets and information are always listed on my website, www.theresaporter.ca.
It’s been an amazing time so far collaborating with other fantastic individuals and meeting incredible people.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me, the first and most important factor that I believe must be understood is that we are never done learning. It is so important for someone who is in the midst of an important journey to never think that you are done learning. As soon as you think you are, you are doing a great disservice to not just those you will be connecting with but mostly yourself. If you think you are an expert who knows all, you are limiting yourself.
Second, there is always more to learn! There will always be an opportunity to further expand. You have to keep your eyes open and a keen awareness. Learn to see situations and points of view outside of yourself and not just your perspective. The broader the view, the more to see and understand! learn from all directions and know that there are always surprises around every corner as long as you are open to seeing and expanding yourself.
lastly, learning resilience. Know that not everything will work out the way you want. What you see as a failure is really lessons learned to help propel you forward. It can only hold you back if you choose to hold on to it and not let it go. Don’t let anything stay with you and become the pit of your own demise. The hill may seem bigger than you think you can climb but as long as you keep moving, you WILL get to the top.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
In the past, I had surrounded myself with people who I strived to appease. Over the years I learned the importance of those we choose to surround ourselves with. This lesson made me take a hard look at who I had around me, why, and what was it that they were bringing to the relationship. It is so important to know that you can only be as successful as what you surround yourself with. At the top of anyone’s list is the people followed by things like the state of your home, office, and so on.
If you can’t trust those around you, if you can’t lean on those around you, if you can’t rely on those around you, you will fail! Choose wisely and carefully.
The way I best like to explain this is the following: Everything is energy. From the clothes you wear to the thoughts you think and the words you say. It is all energy. With understanding this, it is then important to realize that if everything we see, think, and say is energy, then it must hold a vibration. Some vibrations are high and some are low. Things like messy rooms or lying are lower vibrating energies. On the other end, we have things like speaking the truth, healthy communication, and beautifully and mindfully curated creations all vibrating high. This means that the people around you are also holding a vibration. Where are they sitting on that scale?
I am blessed to have the friends I do. I can easily say that I am where I am and have been able to accomplish what I have thanks to the amazing friends I have supporting me along this crazy journey. I know that I can trust those I have in my inner circle and that I can lean on them for support when needed. We are all human and need support, especially when we feel like we’ve lost track or focus. I have an amazing support system. Not only do they help keep me focused, but they are also honest and I can trust them to call me out when needed. It’s not always fluffy and happy. Sometimes it’s rough so having people around us to call us out or lead us back is so important.
