Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kam O’neal. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kam, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Authenticity. The key is not to focus on who is in the room or what they look like. The focus should be on the difference you can make and the value you can add. The rest is up for reflection. Plant trees everywhere you go, meaning share seeds of inspiration with people even if just being yourself. People will remember your impact before your name (or your physical appearance).

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Kam O’Neal of Kam O’Neal Productions, previously known as Solflower Photography. You might be wondering why “productions”? It’s simple: I offer more than just photography. My work encompasses a visual experience, from video ads and user-generated content to lifestyle shoots with models or full-scale launch campaigns. We’re all about creative experimentation and taking risks that lead to unexpected, yet positive, outcomes. This approach keeps our prices competitive and allows me to explore new creative avenues without risking my clients’ brands.
Photography is not just my job; it’s my passion. It’s the lens through which I connect businesses with their public image. While most people see a blue sky as just that, an artist like me sees inspiration, perhaps an ocean within a galaxy. That’s the difference I bring to the table.
I’ve been a photographer for nine years, specializing in various niches. Initially, I worked with small businesses as their go-to content creator, which led me down this path. Instead of college, I spent my early adult years discovering what type of photography truly resonates with me. I thought it was portraits because that’s what I knew, but I realized product photography had been my calling all along.
On a lighter note, I’m an Aquarius who also runs an online Botanica store—AstroSeconds, my astrology brand crafted for those who love quick and digestible astrology insights. Through this channel, I share my empathy and intuitive gifts, adding a bit of astrological flair with my Gemini rising, Capricorn mercury, and Leo moon.
At the heart of it, I’m passionate about the human experience and making a difference in my unique way. What I’ve shared here is just the tip of the iceberg. To know Kam O’Neal is to know passion, whether it shows up as dedication, discipline, or setting clear boundaries. I invest my energy only in things I can be passionate about, and that’s a promise.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, the three most impactful attributes were adaptability, hands on learning, and effective communication.
For those starting out, I recommend embracing change and staying flexible; the landscape is always shifting. Cultivate a habit of lifelong learning to keep your skills sharp and relevant. Lastly, hone your communication skills to convey ideas clearly and collaborate well with others.
To develop these:
1. Adaptability: Take on diverse projects to become comfortable with change. Learn from different situations and be open to new methods.
2. Be a student: Set aside time regularly for skill development. Online courses, workshops, and reading can be great resources. Getting out there and being hands on was the biggest resource for my skill development!
3. Effective Communication: Practice active listening and clear articulation of thoughts. Are you able to accurately convey what you’re thinking? Engage in discussions and seek feedback to improve.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents didn’t shelter me from experiences. Life comes at you and it’ll come quick. The most impactful thing they taught me was to always stay ready to pivot.
