We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Charity Taylor a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Charity , thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
When I first started doing hair, I was constantly doubting myself, struggling with imposter syndrome. I viewed my work as “practice,” which led me to be indecisive, reserved, and unsure of my worth. I didn’t charge enough because deep down, I didn’t feel worthy.
Then, one day, something unexpected happened. A woman came into the cosmetology school I was attending and asked for me specifically. I had no idea who she was or how she knew about me, but what followed was a turning point. She told me she admired my work and asked what I needed to do her hair. As we went to the beauty supply, she started asking me about my passion for hair. I was in a period of burnout at the time, but the way she hung onto every word made me reflect.
During our conversation, she asked if I believed in God and if I thought He sends people into our lives to keep us on the right path. That question made me stop and think. Growing up in church, I didn’t really see my day-to-day experiences as holy encounters—but this one certainly felt meant to be.
When we reached the counter, I told her the service would cost $45. She immediately said that was too little and insisted on giving me $100, buying the supplies, and leaving a tip. I was stunned and instinctively told her, “You don’t have to.” She just shook her head and said something that changed my perspective forever: “Never play yourself out of blessings.”
That encounter shifted everything. I stopped saying, “I do hair” and started claiming, “I’m a hairstylist.” I began valuing my work, setting my prices accordingly, and walking in my purpose.
This woman poured so much love, appreciation, and respect into me that day, and I never saw her again after that. But the lesson she taught me stayed. Today, I make sure to give my clients the same level of love and respect she showed me. That’s how I overcame imposter syndrome—by believing in the value of my work and the path I’m on.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I’m Charity, also known as Chaima, a loctitian and hairstylist, and I’ve been working in the hair industry for over six years now. My journey started when I was a young girl, doing hair for friends and family, and it grew into my passion and purpose. I specialize in locs—creating, maintaining, and styling them—but what excites me the most is the deeper connection I build with my clients. For me, hair is not just about aesthetics; it’s a form of self-expression, self-care, and empowerment.
What makes my work special is that I approach every client as an individual. I focus on giving them a luxury experience while maintaining the integrity of their natural hair. Whether it’s loc extensions, retwists, or custom styles, I aim to bring out the best version of themselves with each session.
Professionally, my business, *Light Locs Houston*, is evolving. Recently, I’ve been expanding my brand to include a line of luxury hair care products, featuring a beard balm formulated with South African chebe powder and mango butter. This product not only enhances beard health but also offers a masculine scent, which has been a hit with barbers and clients alike.
Looking forward, I’m excited about growth—both in terms of expanding my product line and increasing my influence in the beauty industry. I’m also stepping into a new chapter with more magazine features and interviews, and I’m exploring educational avenues, where I can help others learn loc care and styling.
Ultimately, my mission is to provide quality, authenticity, and love in everything I do, whether it’s through my hands-on services or the products I create.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back, there were three key qualities that really shaped my journey: resilience, self-awareness, and a willingness to learn.
**Resilience** is a huge part of my story. The beauty industry, like any field, comes with its ups and downs. There were moments when I felt uncertain or even burnt out, but pushing through those moments made me stronger. My advice for anyone starting out is to embrace the setbacks as learning opportunities. Stay committed to your passion, because challenges are part of the process that refine you, not define you.
**Self-awareness** was also vital. In the early stages, I often undersold myself because I didn’t fully recognize my own value. Learning to be aware of what I bring to the table—whether it’s my skill, creativity, or the unique energy I offer—was life-changing. For those starting their journey, I encourage you to do regular self-check-ins. Understand your strengths and weaknesses, and most importantly, trust in your growth. Don’t be afraid to charge what you’re worth, even in the beginning.
Lastly, **the willingness to learn** has been pivotal. The beauty industry is always evolving, and staying open to new techniques, products, and ideas helped me grow in ways I hadn’t anticipated. I recommend always being a student of your craft. Take workshops, invest in mentorship, and network with other professionals. Learning doesn’t stop once you’ve “made it.” It’s a lifelong process that will keep you ahead in any industry.
For anyone at the beginning of their journey, I would say: be resilient, know your worth, and stay open to learning. These three traits will not only help you succeed but also make the journey much more fulfilling.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?
Absolutely! I’m always looking to collaborate with like-minded individuals who are passionate about creating something bigger than themselves. My focus is on building a platform that embodies a holistic lifestyle, one that brings together beauty, health, fashion, and personal growth in a way that inspires others—especially young entrepreneurs and those who need that extra push to keep going.
I’d love to work with individuals from all backgrounds, particularly in the beauty, holistic health, and fashion industries. Whether you’re a creative, a healer, or someone who’s passionate about empowering others, I believe we can come together to share our stories, experiences, and expertise to build something impactful.
