We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Jeff Hyman a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Jeff, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
I have always believed, and taught my children, that if you want to feel good about yourself you need to accomplish something meaningful. More than anything, that requires a good work ethic, and the desire for respect. I have always had both ever since I can remember, but that didn’t nessesarily apply to school. Haha. I totally underachieved there because it didn’t motivate me and getting good grades wasn’t that important to me. But with everything that I have embraced since, meaning my career, my music, my weekly global radio show, and my popular music news newsletters, it was another story. I was the CFO of three New York hospitals, had my own businesses in healthcare finance and then managed large multispecialty medical practices. I was a perfectionist in all of those endeavors, blessed with a creative mind and various talents. At age 18 I was in a very popular folk singing group, The Gaslight Singers, Mercury Records recording artists, performing on national television and in the best venues around the country. I have been on the ballot as a solo artist for a Grammy numerous times.
All of these things were made possible for me because of my work ethic and attention to detail, the desire to succeed and be respected. And the talents that God gave to me. One does not have to accomplish at that level to feel confidence and self respect. Small accomplishments that create pride and put a smile on your face are just as important as big ones if they result in feeling good about yourself. That’s what’s most important in my opinion.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My professional life is a three legged stool. I am a voting member of the Recording Academy and a recording artist with three albums and multiple singles on the market. My latest album, “Legacy” was released in April. I don’t perform live much anymore but enjoy making music videos for folks to both see and hear my work. That’s my favorite stool leg. You can see my videos and listen to my music on my website www.jeffhymanmusic.com. It also contains footage from my Gaslight Singer days back in the 60’s, and current videos and music as well.
The second leg of the stool is my radio show “Somewhere In Time with Jeff Hyman”. It is a recorded one hour show that is aired on approximately 20 internet radio stations globally. It is on the air somewhere in the world everyday. The show is highly unique. I don’t do “top 10” or “Best In Blues” type playlists. Every show is unique and tells a story. It can be about an artist, a genre, a day in history (i.e The Day Elvis Died, or The Three Days of Woodstock) or anything that comes into my mind, like “Songs About Dogs”. I do my research and tailor the playlist to the show’s concept and then talk about background stories and informaton about the playlist. I love doing it and gets lots of great feedback from my listeners.
The third leg of the stool is “Somewhere In Time Music News”. Newsletters that I am retained to do on behalf of artists who want to expand their brand recognition and now, during Grammy voting season, to advocate for votes for a nomination. I publish the newsletters to an extensive mailing list and on all of my social media platforms so the reach is impressive. They have been extremely well received and most of my clients (some of the best indie artists on the planet) tell me that they are amazing and the best designed that they have seen. You can see them on my newsletter website www.somewhereintimemusicnews.com
That’s my story.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Like I have said, the qualities that are most important are work ethic, attention to detail, a good moral base and trying to be the best person that you can be in all respects.. My skills are very varied. I am good with business, I am very creative and also very pragmatic. It is important not to let the emotional side of your personality rule. The intellectual side is most important when it comes to profession. The emotional side is most important when it comes to love and personal interactions. My journey has been a combination of all of these, applied at the right moment and circumstance, but there were many times along the way that I misstepped for one reason or another . I do think that it is impossible to go through life without missteps. It’s what you learn from them and and how you recover and go forward that matters most.
My best advice to those that are early in their journey is to try to maintain an accurate perspective of yourself in all of these ways, be open to criticism and suggestions, and constantly try to improve yourself as best you can. Never rest. To rest is to rust.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
They gave me the freedom at a very young age to be myself and to follow my dreams.
