Meet Jeffrey Proctor

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jeffrey Proctor. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Hi Jeffrey , so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

When it comes to self-care, my top priority is not overdoing it. As a therapist, my mind can get pretty worn out, so it’s essential to carve out time for rest. I know it’s tempting to say yes to everything my friends and family suggest, but I’ve learned the hard way that I need at least one day each weekend to recharge—usually that means a day of quiet with just my wife.

I also make sure to spend my energy wisely. I’ve become pickier about who I hang out with. I want to be around friends who lift me up, not drain me. After a long week of listening to clients, it’s refreshing to be with people who energize me.

Now, let’s talk about the fun stuff! One of my favorite self-care rituals is my monthly trip to the barber. There’s nothing quite like getting a fresh beard trim and a massage to melt away stress. I also love hitting up concerts and trying out new restaurants. These little adventures keep my spirits high and help me recharge for the week ahead.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

My business is called Healing Harmony Counseling, based in Allen, TX. I specialize in working with people with ADHD, failure to launch third culture kids, and expats. These areas are deeply personal to me because I have ADHD myself and experienced living in a different country as a child. I understand these struggles firsthand and am proud to offer the kind of support I wish I’d had when I was younger.
What’s new in my business is that I am now hosting Dungeons and Dragons therapy groups. These groups help with communication skills, career skills, anxiety, and confidence.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Let’s chat about some key skills for therapists and running your own private practice.

First up, self-care is essential! Being a therapist can be emotionally draining, so it’s super important to focus on your own growth and well-being. Sure, we all mess up sometimes—no one’s perfect! But finding that balance between nurturing yourself and supporting your clients will make a big difference in how you guide them.

Next, if you’re diving into private practice, marketing is key! When I first started, I thought clients would just show up because I accepted insurance. Spoiler: that’s not how it works! We’ve got to spread the word about what we do. Whether it’s through social media, your website, or even starting a blog or podcast, you don’t need to do everything, but pick a couple of ways to connect with potential clients.

Lastly, know your worth and be patient! When you’re just starting out, it’s tempting to undercharge because you’re unsure of your value. Remember, you deserve to be compensated fairly! While we’re here to help people, we also need to pay the bills, so find that sweet spot that respects both your work and your financial needs.

Keep these tips in mind as you navigate your journey, and you’ll be well on your way!

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

Let’s Collaborate!

I’m always on the lookout for awesome folks to team up with! First on my list? Therapists. I’m especially interested in connecting with marriage and family therapists since I work a lot with teens and often need someone who can support their families or just the parents.

I’m also keen to collaborate with therapists who specialize in working with third culture kids or clients with ADHD. These are my areas of expertise, and it’s great to have a network of professionals to refer clients to when my schedule is full.

Additionally, I’m looking to connect with therapists from other countries. My third culture kid clients tend to move around a lot, so having contacts in different states and countries is super helpful!

I’d also love to partner with psychiatrists and doctors who really get ADHD. It can make all the difference for my clients if their medical providers understand the nuances of ADHD.

And let’s not forget nutritionists and dieticians! Those who specialize in ADHD can really help improve symptoms, and I’m eager to learn about more professionals in this field.

Last but not least, I’m interested in collaborating with occupational therapists who can assist ADHD clients in developing essential life skills.

If you’re interested in connecting, feel free to reach out! You can call me at 940-290-3191 or shoot me an email at jeffrey@healingharmonycounseling.com.
