We recently connected with Terrie Nelson and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Terrie, so happy to have you on the platform and I think our readers are in for a treat because you’ve got such an interesting story and so much insight and wisdom. So, let’s start with a topic that is relevant to everyone, regardless of industry etc. What do you do for self-care and how has it impacted you?
As a full-time mompreneur, it is crucial for me to be in my best (physical and mental) state. I want to be the best I can be when serving my clients without sacrificing my duties as a parent and a spouse. It can be hectic and fun, I tell you. But despite that, I make sure I always have time for myself. For me, dedicating a few hours of ME TIME is the recharge I need to always be in my best footing. What I usually do is start my week off by reading the bible with my husband so we can reconnect with our faith and live through the week with His words guiding us. I am also starting to get myself into reading self-help books thanks to my husband’s influence. Other than that, I also dedicate a few hours in a day to simply unwind; do the things I love with the people I love. My go-to thing to do is binge on comedies. I especially love watching (and re-watching) The Office with a cup of hot chocolate and heaps and heaps of whipped cream on top. I also like to go on trips to Starbucks for some matcha and their food! I’m a foodie, you see and food fills my heart as it fills my stomach — though not as much as seeing my husband and daughters. Seeing their faces will always be enough to get me energized and fulfilled and I cannot imagine ending my day without them. I then conclude my week doing my skincare routine which in itself can be very therapeutic and relaxing. And that’s how I feel renewed and eager to start greeting my clients and serving them to the best of my abilities.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am a wedding photographer with an editorial-focused approach in photography. We love fine-art, details, and romance which are things that are mostly present in the images we capture. I have been a photographer since 2016 and for me, what is most exciting about my job is being able to hear different stories and curating our sessions accordingly. We love getting our creative juices flowing as we assist our clients in storytelling through photographs. It is always fulfilling to hear how we were able to make their big day extra special by capturing their love through our lenses; by encapsulating their moments so they can have something to look back on in the future. It’s always inspiring to know that we have served our purpose.
Other than wedding photography, we also love serving other creatives in the wedding industry. We tailor branding sessions for business owners and create floral-heavy styled shoots and workshops for photographers who are seeking to expand their skills and portfolio. We love to share what we know and teach what we can! We are on Instagram (@terrieimages), Pinterest (@Terrieimages22), Facebook (Terrie.images) and you can also visit our website at www.terrieimages.com. We also have a collection of whimsical and romantic gowns and you can find them on Instagram (@lillie.maecollection) or see them on our website at www.lilliemaecollection.com.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
When I first started my business, believe it or not, I struggled with shooting in manual mode and I used to spend hours on end with editing. Those were two things I persevered to improve on. During that phase, I took every opportunity to practice how to shoot in manual by participating in styled shoots and getting my family and friends to jump in and model for me if needed. Progress didn’t happen overnight, that’s for sure. But as I got to build my bond with my camera more and more, I was also able to hone my photographic eye and drastically improved how I shoot and edit efficiently and effectively.
If you’re still in the early phase of your journey, my advice is to keep practicing. Seize every opportunity to develop your skills. Get to know your camera really really well and find yourself a community of creatives like you who will happily help you learn new things. And while you’re still at the beginning, make it a priority to learn about branding. Knowing how to brand yourself can be pivotal for your business.
How would you describe your ideal client?
The ideal client for us is someone who’s a dreamer and a visionary. They are someone who loves details and possibly fashion. They have the desire to connect and see their visions come to life. Our ideal client is also someone who is in search of a professional who can create a seamless and timeless experience; an experience that is truly UNIQUE to them.
