Meet Lisa Khan

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Lisa Khan a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Lisa , thank you so much for making time for us today. We’re excited to discuss a handful of topics with you, but perhaps the most important one is around decision making. The ability to make decisions is a key requirement for anyone who wants to make a difference and so we’d love to hear about how you developed your decision-making skills.

As a wedding and event planner, I believe that it is essential to stay organized and plan for all anticipated outcomes. I am a bit old-fashioned as I prefer to write things down on paper; I enjoy creating lists with clear goals and deadlines. Being able to see and reflect on my plans is incredibly valuable. I find that reviewing what went well and identifying areas for improvement after each event helps bring clarity and pushes me to think differently when preparing for the next event.

In the world of wedding and event planning, it is crucial to recognize that decisions often need to be made quickly, especially during events. Challenges can arise unexpectedly, requiring quick thinking and immediate resolutions. I have learned that a planner needs to wear many hats and remain calm while addressing any issues that occur.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three most important qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge for me are dedication, time management, and imagination.

Being a dedicated entrepreneur is challenging, as it requires juggling many roles. Due to its overwhelming nature, losing sight of why you started in the first place can get lost in the shuffle. For me, staying successful means continually reminding myself of my passion for wedding and event planning: I love, love and I enjoy helping others turn their dreams into reality.

Effective time management is essential for a successful event. Developing strong organizational skills has allowed me to adopt smarter practices, work more efficiently, and anticipate challenges before they become problems. Building my brand and reputation from the ground up is something I am truly proud of.

I’ve always had a vivid imagination, which helps me conceptualize my clients’ ideas. Bringing someone else’s dream to life can be difficult, and that’s where imagination and creativity play a vital role in making the wedding of their dreams a reality.

Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me was instill the value of a foundation built on Christian faith and encourage me to learn an instrument; I chose the drums. Starting at age 10, I practised for an hour each day with my sisters. I would be lying if I said I enjoyed it every day; some days were harder than others. My parents’ belief in the value of discipline and perseverance was evident in everything they taught us.

This routine became a creative outlet and helped me develop focus and consistency, skills that have benefited me in countless ways. It taught me to persevere when faced with challenges and to keep pressing forward.

My Christian faith instilled values in me that I carry into my business practices today, such as integrity, compassion and a commitment to serving others. As an entrepreneur navigating different seasons, I am especially grateful for the discipline and spiritual grounding I gained at a young age.
