Meet Jasmin Uy

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jasmin Uy. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Jasmin, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?

In the beginning of my business journey it was hard dealing with people that were hating on me or people that didn’t believe in me. The one thing I would always tell myself was that no matter what I did or didn’t do people would always have something to say so might as well just keep doing what I’m doing, right? Its definitely easier said than done but even blocking people on social media to create a more positive space for me is what I did. At the end of the day protecting your peace, creating boundaries that align with you and your business, and having a more abundant perspective on life is what really helped me block the haters.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

At a very young age I showed interest in make-up or anything beauty. Coming from an Asian-American family the goal was always to get me into the medical field. I did 2 years of pre-requisite classes and dropped out and finally told my parents I wanted to go to beauty school.

Beauty school in 2012/2013 is nothing like it is nowadays and after I got licensed in esthetics I didn’t know where else to go from there. There wasn’t much social media back then, opening a studio space isn’t something they taught in beauty school and skincare/lash extensions weren’t as popular. So I decided to work in retail to make the time pass while I was trying to figure those things out. Fast forward 2, almost 3 years I was still in retail and starting to resent my job. I was 21 and had so much more to offer than what I was putting myself through working in retail. In 2015 I decided to leave my retail job and work in the nightclub industry for a few years so that I could enjoy my early 20’s while making a decent amount of money.

Working in the nightclub industry showed me what real hustle was like. The hours we worked, the grind to sell tables, the clientele, the customer service, etc. It was an amazing experience for someone who was my age. I worked in the nightclub industry for a few years until I started to feel like it was getting too overwhelming for me. From that point I left the nightclub and went back to retail thinking I could turn retail management into a career I could grow to love. I loved customer service and I enjoyed engaging with clients, so why not give it another shot? That retail job lasted 10 months until I finally decided to take my first PMU course in 2019. From there I went back to the nightclub since the schedule was more flexible, I could take clients on my days off and work the weekends and the club.

Not too long after, COVID hit and I got laid off from my nightclub job. I was scared. I was nervous about not having a steady pay every week until I realized that I didn’t want to go back to working for anyone after COVID. I decided that if I was gonna get unemployment from being laid off plus COVID relief assistance then I might as well put that money into something I can make my own. Thats when EFFORTLESS BEAUTY LLC. was founded, May 2020.

During the few months we were on lockdown I took the time to do more courses online and in person so that I could add more services to my service list before everything opened back up and it was great! That was honestly the best thing I could have done for myself. Investing in myself so that I could build my knowledge and skills in services.

Now its 2024 and we’re still here. Standing strong! At EFFORTLESS BEAUTY LLC. we strive to make our clients feel confident in their own skin by enhancing their natural features through permanent makeup and skin care services. Not only do we strive for natural beauty but we’re all about helping other woman or men build their skills in the permanent makeup industry by offering beginner courses and mentorship programs.

We will be launching some new training programs and online courses coming in 2025 so that we can help other upcoming artists in other states and countries build their dream beauty business.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I think that when people start a business they give up once things get a little rough. They’re not seeing the return quick enough or they’re not hustling hard enough to get people through the door but in all honesty going through those pains is what my journey more impactful.

We all have to go through growing pains when doing something new. While going through those feelings of change its hard but having the right people in your circle will make it worth while. As a beginner entrepreneur you’ll start to see who your real friends and family are. It was tough and I cried a lot, but it gets better.

With starting a business I started to realize I not only needed to be the best version of myself to run my business. Not physically but mentally. I started to heal from a lot of past trauma that I felt like was holding me back from growing my business. Being in therapy really helped me have a better perspective of what I wanted for myself and my future with running a business.

From my experience, the qualities that were the most impactful during the early stages of my business were being able to be more self aware of the choices I made and the people I surrounded myself with. Setting myself up for success for the day is something I practice during my day to day life so that I can have a more efficient work day. As a business owner no one is going to tell you when you need to do certain things, you have to get up and just do it. Wake up early enough to create a schedule for yourself that will help you get things done. Focus what needs to get done that day and don’t worry about tomorrow. As a PMU artist gaining clients isn’t the only thing I needed to worry about. I would worry so much about getting admin work done or posting on social media. Create a schedule that works for you and stick to it.

My advice to all beginner business owners is, work on you while you work on your business, be careful with who you let into your circle and create a schedule that works for you so that you can utilize each day to the fullest.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

There have been 2 very important people that have made overcoming challenges less stressful. I would have to say my boyfriend, Arnold, has been the BIGGEST supporter. No matter what I go through or how many times I’ve cried to him about quitting he’s always found a way to remind me why I started my business and who I was doing this for. Having a strong, supportive partner is essential. He’s cheered me on through all the tears, helped with my business operations, and even helped re-model my current studio space.

Arnold wasn’t the only person who really helped me. I met my mentor Jackie back in 2022 and I wish I had met her sooner. She has been there to help develop my skills and overcoming obstacles with business and growing my business. Even though Jackie lives in another state she still makes the time to follow up with me. The one thing that I cherish the most about Jackie is that she cares about my business and she cares about me, as a person. She has made my mental health a priority and has also helped me realize that with hustling also comes healing.
