We recently connected with Andrew Oporto and have shared our conversation below.
Andrew, so great to have you with us and thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with the community. So, let’s jump into something that stops so many people from going after their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. We’d love to hear about how you dealt with that and persisted on your path.
People used to say to me, “Wow, it must be hard going on stage.” It’s definitely harder being poor for 10 years trying to chase a dream in comedy. You have to make the mental choice to do what you want to do in life. Happiness comes above everything, and you have one life to live so you might as well do what you enjoy doing. Haters will make you tougher, and can actually contribute to your strength and resilience.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a comedian from Toronto who focuses on stand up comedy and online videos. I also work for a face reading company, called Roya, which has really helped me with my mental health and happiness. How does face reading work? Basically your personality and life experiences are written on your face. Roya uses those understandings to break through subconscious perceptions you have that may be holding you back in life. I have used this a lot in my comedy career to help me get ahead.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Patience, persistence and enjoyment. Patience is important because success takes time. Nothing happens over night. Persistence is necessary because you need to keep going towards your goal no matter what happens. Everyone gets thrown off track, you just need to keep going. Enjoyment is key. You need to actually like what you do. I see so many people in comedy or in the workforce that are miserable. Then why are you doing it!? You have to enjoy the process, but also enjoy the failures, because the failures actually teach you and help you grow.
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
The founder of Roya, Wael Abdul-Hamid, has given me so much wisdom and coaching that is has transformed my life.
