We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Vempre Terrell, Jr.. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Vempre below.
Vempre, we’re so excited for our community to get to know you and learn from your journey and the wisdom you’ve acquired over time. Let’s kick things off with a discussion on self-confidence and self-esteem. How did you develop yours?
Worry. Anxiety. Depression. These are three aspects that have sadly become key points in society, yet the negative effects that they have upon the mental health of countless individuals has become excessive. When an adverse happening takes place in life, many people are naturally drawn to hang their heads in shame and submit to their challenges. Although times existed in my life when obstacles presented themselves in fashions that made me what to give up, I learned that something so small, yet so significant was what I needed for me to overcome any obstacle: faith. By building my connection with God through prayer and studying His Word, my confidence and self-esteem became empowered. With this, my faith was strengthened and my trust in God overpowered my doubt. Points in my life when words like never and cannot were noteworthy parts of my vocabulary became points in my life when words like will and can took the place of such pessimistic words.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Expressing myself in a positive fashion is a defining aspect of my personality. Too often people suffer in silence by holding their feelings inside. On the best of days and the worst of days, writing is one of my best forms of expression. It allows me to positively communicate my inner emotions, as well as encourage other individuals. From writing books as an author, speeches as a motivational speaker, poems as a poet, songs as a songwriter, or whatever the case happens to be, I use the words that God inspires me with so that I will allow myself to let the greatness in my mind flow onto paper. My first book, “The Eyes of Faith,” notably led me to write my following book, “My Walk Through the Valley.” Both books served as an encouragement for my readers and for me. These books are two key examples of me bringing forth my passion for writing as a means of positive expression.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Courage in the face of challenges, risk-taking to rise above the status quo, and trusting in God to work things out in my favor are three qualities that have been most impactful for me. There have been times in my life when uncertainty has existed and the possibility of not moving forward in life has presented itself to me. Even so, embracing these three qualities served as points of empowerment for me to reach new heights in life. The most useful piece of advice that I have for others who are early in their journey is to have faith before you start, and keep the faith until the end. No matter how big or small a person’s goal happens to be, the person should hold strong to the belief that he or she has what it takes to reach the goal.
Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
The Bible has played an important role in the development of who I am. Days have come about when doubt has presented itself in my life to the extent that I began to believe that I would never be able to reach certain goals that I set for myself. However, by familiarizing myself more with the Word of God, faith began to take the place of doubt for me. As I learned to put my trust in God instead of giving my time to worry, I reached goals that I set for myself, which some people told me were a waste of time to give even one second of thought toward achieving. The titles of my two key books, “The Eyes of Faith” and “My Walk Through the Valley,” tell significant points within themselves before readers even read one page of either book. These are two books that I highly encourage others to read, because I truly believe they will serve as a key form of encouragement.
