Meet Chrishan Wright

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Chrishan Wright. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Chrishan, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

I landed on my purpose during the pandemic. For many years I struggled to find my purpose. While I had my share of professional success and accolades, those were for things that I was good at, not necessarily things that lit me up inside or that aligned with my spirit.

In 2017, I embarked on my first solo trip overseas to a place I had always wanted to live since I was a young child in the Bronx—New Zealand. Having that time away from my children and other responsibilities allowed me the opportunity to begin the process of rediscovery. On that trip, I decided that I would move abroad when my youngest child graduated from high school in 2023.

I spent several years, saving and investing to ensure I would have enough money for this move and then the pandemic struck. Despite two successful scouting trips to New Zealand, I realized that I did not meet the criteria to secure a long-term residency visa plus my daughter expressed that she was uncomfortable with my being so far away from her while she was in college in the U.S.

A few months after the pandemic hit I experienced my second layoff in seven months. That coupled with the lockdown and the civil unrest following the murders of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and George Floyd, I began to get depressed. As the sole breadwinner for my family, I had to figure out a way to redirect the negative feelings into something positive. Shortly after that, Blaxit Global was born.

Blaxit Global is a media platform and community of support, resources, and inspiration for Black people around the world who wish to leave their country of origin for a better life abroad. Our ecosystem consists of our podcast, website, private community—Blaxit Global Passport—private coaching, and in-person events. Since creating Blaxit Global, hundreds of Black people have begun their move-abroad journey or have taken the leap. I receive messages daily on how Blaxit Global has helped change the trajectory of their lives.

Before creating Blaxit Global, I had no intention of publicly sharing my private desire to move abroad. But with what felt like the world seemingly being on fire during the pandemic, I threw caution to the wind and did the scary thing not knowing that doing that scary thing, would ultimately lead me to finding my purpose. I know my purpose is to help others on their quest for freedom.

In September 2023, I moved to Lisbon, Portugal, and am thriving in my new life abroad. I continue to support Black men and women who are interested in moving abroad because I know that experiencing the joy of freedom is my reparation.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

The three qualities that were most impactful on my journey have been resilience, creativity, and faith. I think everyone needs to have a level of resilience on their journey because life isn’t easy. There are peaks and valleys along the journey and you have to be prepared to experience both the highs and the lows.

Creativity is something that I’ve cultivated over my lifetime. I’ve always considered myself to be both analytical and creative. However, as I have gotten older, I’ve embraced things that foster my creative side. The ability to express yourself in different ways engages your brain differently and can unlock loads of possibilities you never knew existed.

Lastly, my faith has gotten me through it all. Faith has been my source of strength, support, and encouragement during the good times and the bad. Faith has fortified me and enabled me to overcome life’s biggest challenges and obstacles.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?

When I get overwhelmed it is really helpful for me to take a step back and figure out what the source or sources of overwhelm are and how to remove whatever is causing me angst. That might be a person, a task, an issue, etc. In the past, I struggled with hyper-independence and felt I needed to do everything on my own. I now realize that is largely due to unresolved trauma from the past. I have learned to delegate and remove points of friction which helps me operate in my zone of genius.
