How did you develop your decision-making skills?

Decision making can be stressful and anxiety inducing, but the ability to make decisions quickly is often what separates the most effective leaders from others. We connected with some of the best and brightest do-ers we know and asked them how they developed their decision-making skills.

I developed my decision-making skills by balancing multiple responsibilities that require constant prioritization and time management. With college courses, I need to make strategic choices about how much time to devote to studying and completing assignments while still making room for other activities. This demands assessing deadlines, understanding course requirements, and deciding which subjects require more focus at specific times, such as when studying for any of my business courses or managing other intensive tasks. As a wedding and event planner, I believe that it is essential to stay organized and plan for all anticipated outcomes. I am a bit old-fashioned as I prefer to write things down on paper; I enjoy creating lists with clear goals and deadlines. Being able to see and reflect on my plans is incredibly valuable. I find that reviewing what went well and identifying areas for improvement after each event helps bring clarity and pushes me to think differently when preparing for the next event. Read more>>

When I was brought on to be SODA: Student Organ Donation Advocates’ first full-time employee, I was unsure of myself. I knew my long history with the organization and love for organ, eye, and tissue donation would help guide me, but I felt too young and inexperienced to lead an organization. I shared these feelings with a Board member, and she shared, “Anyone at any age would be intimidated to take on this role.” This advice reminded me that my age wouldn’t hinder me if I didn’t let it and that I needed to surround myself with people who cared about our mission and me. So, as I began my journey as SODA’s first employee, I worked closely with our Founder and Board President, other Board members, and advisors to help make decisions and set goals for the organization.  Read more>>
