Meet Cheryl Dedecker

We were lucky to catch up with Cheryl Dedecker recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Cheryl, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

It took many years. I was so shy as a child, at family gatherings I would pretend to nap so I could blend into the background. In other words, self-esteem and confidence didn’t come naturally to me! I was a shy, sensitive, awkward, smart kid who dealt with social anxiety and being bullied. At some point, I remember just wanting to feel comfortable in my own skin. I started pushing myself to do things that made me uncomfortable–drama, forensics, debate, etc… Slowly, I began to realize I had the ability to shine and the more I pushed myself, the more comfortable I became.
In college, I studied psychology and began to realize how much my thoughts were affecting how I felt about myself. I immersed myself in books that described how to use visualization, affirmations and self-acceptance to feel more confident. These tools were life changing for me. It was as if I began to realize that I could choose how I view myself in the world–by focusing on my perceived flaws or focusing on my successes (however big or small). Beginning to focus on my “wins” made a significant difference in my confidence. In addition to pursuing learning about the mind, I also had some great professors and mentors along the way who helped me see my strengths. My interest in building my own confidence shifted to wanting to share my tools with others, and I became a professional counselor after getting my Master’s Degree. Now, I am a Board Certified Hypnotist and Coach, helping everyday people improve their self-belief, change negative thinking patterns and achieve their dreams.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I was a Professional Counselor before becoming a Board Certified Hypnotist, so I consider what I do is a unique “Full Brain Approach” to Coaching and personal transformation. I’m experienced in both cognitive, conscious brain tricks as well as subconscious reprogramming- adding them both together means you’re bringing your full brain power to any goal or challenge. I specialize in helping people conquer fears, stress and limiting beliefs, improve sleep, increase self-care, cope with life transitions and achieve their dreams. Sleep affects all aspects of health, so I am passionate about helping clients who struggle with getting good sleep. I have programs on the app Soundwise for sleep improvement, one specifically for physicians (who struggle with sleep during on-call duties) entitled Better Sleep, Better Life, Better Doctor and one for everyday people who just need better sleep entitled Better Sleep, Better YOU, Better Life! For the past 10 years, I have specialized in helping medical professionals overcome burnout, pass professional exams and gain career clarity. So much of what we experience in life begins with how we think about the world, ourselves, and any challenges we encounter. When our thoughts are positive, self-affirming, authentic, and resourceful, the possibilities are endless!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Persistence, Finding excellent mentors/coaches, Maximizing brain power to achieve my dreams! Building my own business and working at what I love to do wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t persist in my endeavors and keep working to improve. I was blessed to work with successful people in my field who helped me learn the ropes of starting a successful business from scratch. I continue to benefit from working with a coach to stay focused on my goals and be accountable to myself.
Through my years as a counselor and my career now as a hypnotist, I have an overflowing toolbox of tips and tricks for making my brain work for me. These tools have helped me stay motivated, take consistent action to grow, think positively when overcoming obstacles and use my imagination to help achieve my dreams. I love sharing these powerful tools with my clients!

How would you describe your ideal client?

My ideal client is someone who has goals and dreams that they are very motivated to reach, but they’re feeling stuck or unsure of how to overcome obstacles to get there. These goals may involve career, health, overcoming fears, sleeping better, having a healthier relationship with food and their body, passing an important exam, or even getting to a point in life when they’re feeling driven to live more fully but unsure of how to make that happen for themselves. When we feel stuck, it is usually because subconscious patterns and habits are kicking in automatically. These can feel insurmountable, because we cannot “think” our way out of them! We need to overcome these obstacles subconsciously. Hypnosis does that, and is a powerful tool for helping my clients get unstuck and propel themselves into their happiest, healthiest life.
