We recently connected with Satya Bosman and have shared our conversation below.
Satya, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
This is a good question because ultimately I think the quality you need to be successful in the long run is grit or resilience. I think Rudyard Kipling sums it up well in his poem If – ‘if you can keep your head when all those around you are losing theirs and blaming it on you’.
When things get challenging I try and stay the course. Perhaps I saw this modelled to me in my family, my family are ‘stayers’, they don’t run when things get difficult and I’ve applied this in my life and I think it’s helped me be successful.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a Poet and Editor. I co-edit The Black Cat Poetry Press with my friend and fellow poet Catherine Balaq. The press has been going for almost three years now and we’ve published 10 titles. We have a busy list coming up in 2025. Our submission window is October every year. The reputation of the press for publishing beautiful poetry books is growing and the quality of submissions is getting better and better. We pride ourselves in being able to platform up and coming poets. We do have a particular interest in eco poetry however we’re open to all subjects provided they are not bigoted in any way.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Gosh, I think a passion for what you’re doing is the key ingredient. If you love and believe in what you do it will carry you through. The most important advice I can give is take the first step, everything else will work itself out. Don’t wait for the perfect environment to do something, just start!
Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I would say my co-editor Catherine Balaq and my friend and fellow poet Ophira Adar. They are both enormously talented and have given me so much confidence and support to keep going. They have both just finished their MA course through the Poetry School.
