Meet Mary Helen Harter

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Mary Helen Harter. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Mary Helen below.

Mary Helen, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

Finding my purpose in graphic design has been an ongoing journey. Initially, I was drawn to graphics for its creative potential and the way it allows ideas to come to life visually. However, it was when I started working with small businesses that I truly discovered my calling. Helping these entrepreneurs express their brand identity through design has been incredibly rewarding. Many small business owners are passionate about their products but often struggle with how to convey their vision effectively. By creating unique and timeless branding, I not only help them stand out in a saturated market but also give them the confidence to showcase their offerings.

Seeing a business transform with a new logo, website, or marketing materials is a powerful reminder of the impact that design can have. It’s fulfilling to know that my work not only fuels my creativity but also empowers others to succeed.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Starting my own graphic design business was a leap of faith, fueled by my passion for creativity and my desire for flexibility as a single mother. Balancing my career with being deeply involved in my kids’ lives has been a challenging yet rewarding experience.

From the beginning, I had to believe in the risks I took, allowing any business successes or failures to be a lesson learned and not get me down. I carved out dedicated work hours during nap times and after bedtime, turning my home into a creative studio. My kids often inspire my designs, and I love involving them in the process—whether it’s asking for their opinions or letting them play with legos all over my office floor while I work. This not only fosters their creativity but also strengthens our bond.

Navigating the ever-changing landscape of the business world has been another layer of complexity. I stay adaptable, constantly learning about new trends, tools, and marketing strategies. Networking with other entrepreneurs has been invaluable; their insights and support help me stay motivated and informed.

The journey has its ups and downs, but I cherish the moments of balance—when I can celebrate my kids’ milestones while also growing my business. This path has taught me resilience and the importance of following my passions, and I’m proud to be building a future for my family while doing what I love.

My future goals include developing passive income streams alongside my existing and new branding clients, while also expanding my wedding stationery business. Each of these endeavors encourages me to tap into my creativity in unique ways.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe my most impactful qualities lie in my commitment to flexibility as my own boss, my creativity that fosters timeless designs in a saturated and trend-driven market, and my ability to maintain a sense of humor about life.

Being flexible allows me to adapt to the evolving needs of my clients and the design world, ensuring that I can pivot when necessary and embrace new opportunities. My creativity pushes me to craft designs that stand the test of time, prioritizing substance over fleeting trends. In a world where styles often come and go, I strive to create work that resonates deeply and endures.

Additionally, my sense of humor brings a lightness to the challenges of entrepreneurship. It helps me navigate the ups and downs with a positive attitude, making it easier to connect with clients and collaborators alike. This combination of qualities not only fuels my passion for design but also shapes a work environment that is both productive and enjoyable.

If you knew you only had a decade of life left, how would you spend that decade?

I’m currently navigating a busy schedule and figuring out the best times and ways to outsource specific tasks. As someone who enjoys being the creative force behind every project, it can be challenging for me to delegate responsibilities to others. However, I recognize the importance of collaboration in order to manage my workload effectively.
