We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Marielaina Perrone. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with MARIELAINA below.
MARIELAINA, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?
My generosity comes from my daughter, Ashley. She was the most giving person I ever met. My driving force is to make her proud. While my daughter fought for her life, mine became refocused. I always put my children first but she taught me to put others that dont have support, that I don’t even need to know, first. Losing a child doesnt just change your life, it changes your entire future. It caused me to change my mindset completely to a life of service.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I am a mom, a Dentist and the President of The Ashley Strong Foundation. My family is my inspiration to be my best version of myself. As a dentist, I aspire to give comfort and excellent care to every patient. To treat all as individuals with gentleness and empathy. To offer the best quality materials, labs, and skills while establishing a relationship with the patients. As a Foundation head, I aspire to not just succeed but to excel. My daughter, Ashley who started the foundation from her hospital bed while fighting for her own life created her mission to help other children in a difficult long term or end term healthcare setting to find comfort and the love of community. Presently we are about to have our annual Gala on Oct 19th to fundraise for the year ahead. We spread Ashley’s sparkle to other kids who are having a rough time. While the healthcare setting is keeping them alive We are helping them to thrive.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Becoming a parent is #1. The focus on self is put on the backburner and other people’s lives become more important than your own.
Having Faith has given me the strength to continually move forward when I could have easily remained in a hole of grief.
Acceptance and forgiveness. Knowing that everyday is a new day to start fresh and not wallowing in yesterday’s obstacles. Forgiving myself and others for mistakes and trying to be understanding of human imperfection.
I think that so many are driven today to be self centered and please themselves first that we need to be reminded that serving others is the greatest and most fulfilling thing we can do. At the end of the day, its the person we carried over the finish line not the one who raced across it first that will impact our lives.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
I get overwhelmed often
As a mom of toddler twins, and a college age child, running a solo dental office, and running the Ashley Strong Foundation I am constantly pushing my limits. One strategy is focusing on one thing at a time… trying to shut off dentist mode when I leave my office, trying not to stress over Foundation work while home and to focus on my children while around them. I also remind myself when my mind is wondering on all the things that need doing to ” stay in the moment”. This is how I refocus my mindset. There were many times I would watch my so playing hockey and would start crying because I missed having my daughter by my side. I would start missing my son playing his game. When I remind myself to focus on whats most important in this moment it brings me peace and clarity. So basically my strategy is to stay in the moment.
