Meet Lucas Smith

We were lucky to catch up with Lucas Smith recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Lucas, we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?

To develop confidence and self-esteem as an artist, I believe it’s essential to focus on balance—both personally and professionally. Confidence in yourself and your work comes not just from your artistic achievements, but from how you care for your overall well-being. As artists, we often pour our emotions into our work, whether through the colors we choose or the techniques we use. That emotional connection can sometimes make us vulnerable, but it’s also a source of strength.

For me, it starts with prioritizing my health and happiness. I ensure that I take care of my body by eating nutrient-dense, balanced meals, getting sufficient rest, and incorporating regular exercise, such as walking, hiking, and Pilates. When I feel physically well, it positively affects my mental and emotional state, which in turn strengthens my confidence and creativity.

Another key element is understanding that growth is an ongoing process. Just like the world around us, we are constantly evolving. As I continue to learn, study, and create, I gain resilience and a deeper belief in my abilities. This personal growth translates into my work, allowing me to tap into the transformative power of art, which has the ability to heal, connect, and inspire others.

In the end, building confidence comes from knowing you’re doing what’s best for yourself in all areas of life. When you take care of yourself, both inside and out, you’re able to fully engage in your work with passion and purpose, recognizing your strengths and developing your unique voice as an artist.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

Hi ‘m Lucas Smith an emerging artist based in San Diego, focused on creating abstract paintings that reflect my connection to nature. The beauty of the world around us deeply inspires my work, and I aim to translate that into each piece I create. My process involves blending raw, organic materials with skilled techniques, resulting in dynamic artworks that invite viewers on a visual journey.

I leverage my website, www.lucassmithart.com, as a hub for my work, where collectors and art enthusiasts can explore my portfolio and learn more about my artistic journey. I have been actively submitting my work to local, regional, and national exhibitions, and I’m proud of the recognition my art has received. Looking ahead to 2025, I have ambitious plans to further expand my presence in the San Diego art community, with new projects and exhibitions in the works.

For me, art is a powerful medium to express the emotions and energy of life, and I’m excited to continue exploring and sharing this passion with others. There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, three key qualities that have been most impactful in my journey are having a clear vision, staying organized, and collaborating with others. First, having a vision allows you to define your goals and stay focused on your artistic path. It’s essential to know where you want to go, as it guides every decision you make. Second, organization is crucial for success. From managing your time to planning projects, being organized helps you stay productive and meet your goals. Lastly, collaborating with others who inspire you is invaluable. Working with fellow artists creates opportunities to learn, grow, and support each other, ultimately enriching your own work.

For those early in their journey, I recommend developing these areas by staying focused on your long-term vision while remaining flexible in your approach. Find ways to stay organized, whether through setting daily goals or keeping track of deadlines, as this will help you stay on track. And, most importantly, surround yourself with a community of creatives. Collaborating with others not only helps you grow but also contributes to the broader art community. Pay it forward whenever possible, because art has the power to heal and inspire, and working together creates exciting opportunities for everyone involved.

I will be co-hosting an artist workshop Saturday, November 23rd, 2024 from 10:30AM-1:30PM at Art on 30th in San Diego, where artists will be collaborating with each other in a dynamic group setting. Space is still available and more details can be found on my website.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

As an emerging abstract artist with a passion for nature, my ideal client would be someone who not only appreciates art but feels a deep connection to the natural world. They’d likely seek art that evokes a sense of calm or curiosity, responding to organic shapes, earthy colors, and textures that mirror the beauty of landscapes, oceans, and natural elements. This client values originality and has a strong appreciation for how abstract art can capture the feeling of nature rather than a literal representation.

Additionally, an ideal client would be someone open to exploring the emotions and ideas behind each piece, recognizing that abstract art offers a personal journey of interpretation. They’d likely be curious, adventurous, and appreciate a piece not only for how it looks but for how it makes them feel in their space. This type of client would appreciate the process, understanding that my work is a balance between spontaneity and intentional design, rooted in inspiration from the world around us.
