Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Luna. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Luna, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Imposter syndrome is very common for artists. And a lot of people in tattoo industry have it. It’s very hard to overcome and start believing in yourself. But every time when I see how happy my clients are with their new tattoo and how they love my art, it makes me the happiest person in the world and I forgetting about any doubts.
For other artists with imposter syndrome I would recommend to be more kind to yourself and stop compering yourself to others, there is a lot of people that love your art and support you and nobody is perfect.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I always wanted to be an artist. I was drawing all the time since I remember myself. I decided to become a tattoo artist when I first saw a tattoo in person. I fell in love with idea of putting my art on people’s body, it was very fascinating for me. My journey as tattoo artist began when I was 18 years old in Slovakia and then I moved to US. Since then being tattoo artist became for me more than just a career it a life style. I love it and my favorite part is meeting a lot of cool people and listening to their life story.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
First and most important is to believe in yourself. There will be a lot of swings on your way and it’s important to always remember that even after the most dark times there will be better days.
Second is don’t compare yourself to others. It’s very hard to do when a social media play very important part in everyone’s life right now, you subconsciously start comparing your success with others and it might trigger imposter syndrome.
The final one is don’t pay attention to irrational criticism. There will be a lot of people who would hate anything that you do for no reason. For a few first years of my career it was hard for me when I saw negative comments and I was taking it too close and was even thinking about quitting. But haters will hate and you just need to do your thing. There always will be many more people that will be in love with your art than the ones that will do negative comments.
What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
I am one of those people who work without a break for a very long time without noticing. And because of it it’s not rare for me to feel overwhelmed or burned out. In that time the only thing that helps me is just take at least one day off without any social media and just go hiking or relaxing in spa. It really helps to lose the tension
