Meet Jillian Riscoe

We recently connected with Jillian Riscoe and have shared our conversation below.

Jillian, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?

As far as being resilient, I’ve overcome being bullied as a child to being in a long term relationship where I dealt with domestic violence and an alcoholic partner. Having support from loved ones and peers is so helpful, but also learn to be serious about your mental health journey whether that is finding a creative outlet or going to therapy or whatever it may be for you – it can look different for everyone. Heal, learn, keep a good mindset, dust yourself off and then fight like hell to be your own advocate in moving forward in a positive/upward direction in your own life.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I’m a singer/songwriter/musician based out of Kansas City, MO – I spend a lot of time in Nashville, TN as well as on the road which fills my gypsy heart – my original music is soulful modern country w/ elements of pop/rock music as well a storyteller feel. Currently working on new original music and more!

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, three skills I acquired and worked on that were most impactful in my journey would be: asking every question you can, thinking outside the box and creating connections/community.

For anyone early on in their journey of pursuing a passion, I feel like you can best get started by just getting started. Small steps to start. The scariest part is always getting started but just trust yourself and dive in.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful thing my parents did for me in my journey in music was/is that they are constantly so enthusiastic and supportive in my career and always sharing helpful ideas/advice in my goals.
