We recently connected with Ned Dehan and have shared our conversation below.
Ned, so many exciting things to discuss, we can’t wait. Thanks for joining us and we appreciate you sharing your wisdom with our readers. So, maybe we can start by discussing optimism and where your optimism comes from?
When I was growing up, no one ever believed me. Perhaps my grandmother did, but that’s about it. Everyone else always told me that I would fail without them. But I remember being a kid…watching TV, listening to the radio, reading books, and even listening to stories on audio cassettes in 90’s. I remember thinking…I can do this. Optimism comes from learning, observing, trying, focusing on your strength, and ignoring the naysayers.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
My name is Ned DeHan, and I am the host of Black Box Online Radio. I am also the author of the “White Horse Killer Saga,” which is a set of stories. The Audio Books are available on YouTube for free.
The focus of my YouTube channel is exploring the true crime world. It is a darker side of humanity that I believe needs to be explored. The cases that I concentrate on are the Zodiac Killer, Jack the Ripper, and D.B. Cooper. I also go live to interact with my subscribers.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
My three moments of impact are simple.
1. Empathy. Caring about other people. Trying to create a program that is for everyone in the audience. Listening to what people have to say and being honest in a humanizing way.
2. Fairness. I frequently talk about unsolved mysteries, and if a mystery is unsolved, we don’t know the end result. Therefore, people have a right to share what they think. As long as they are not violating someone’s boundaries, I am going to listen to them.
3. Endurance. One of the most valuable lessons that I have learned is that is important to be consistent. My goal was to create a daily show for people to listen to and follow, not just something that is filled with information, but also one that is just going to help people get through their day.
How would you describe your ideal client?
As a YouTube Host, I interact with a lot of people. I consult with them about their true crime observations, as well as their books and podcasts. I also have lots of guests on my channel, Black Box Online Radio.
The ideal person to work with is someone who never gets angry. I am a person who believes that you should never get angry about anything. As Virgil once said “Anger carries the mind away.”
Sometimes I have moments when I get mad, but we have to remember that controlling ourselves is a characteristic of civilized behavior. The best manager that I have ever had was named Tony. I worked in a store when I was 23 years old. Tony was the boss, and he never once did anything unprofessional. He never once showed any anger. If I made a mistake, he showed me how to correct it. “Okay, last time you did it this way. Next time I want you to do it this way instead.”
My ideal client or person to work with is someone with emotional control and values fairness.
On Black Box Online Radio I talk about true crime cases and unsolved mysteries. I believe that we can discuss subjects like this without getting lost in our emotions. Some people present their true crime theories and observations because they want to be right, as opposed to getting the truth. Some people follow unsolved mysteries because they want respect for themselves, as opposed to getting the truth. In the genre of true crime, the truth , the facts, and the impact on the victims should be paramount.
