We recently connected with Terry Hord and Tamara Kahn and have shared our conversation below.
Terry Hord and Tamara Kahn, we’re thrilled to have you sharing your thoughts and lessons with our community. So, for folks who are at a stage in their life or career where they are trying to be more resilient, can you share where you get your resilience from?
Tamara and Terry were diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in her 20s when their lives were just starting. We were thriving young ladies, starting a family.
Our mother was diagnosed at the age of 33 with terminal cancer. We were only 13 years old.
We watched our beautiful mother go through multiple treatments through the years and be very weak and sick. We would wake up every morning and she would have a smile on her face and say “make it a great day.” and “I love you “
Even though we knew she did not feel well she always looks happy to be strong for us. So when we were diagnosed, we were brave and knew that we could fight this disease.
Fast forward 25 years later, and we both are paralyzed from the waist down and have limited use of our hands.
Our children have only known us living with MS. From an early age, they knew that we had a chronic illness, and that it would not go away.
So like our mother we had to dig deep and stay strong for our children and family. We always wake up and find the beauty in the day. Life is difficult these days as we are paralyzed, and rely on most daily needs.
That doesn’t stop us, we are very involved with the National MS Society. Terri is a trustee with a Georgia National MS Society, we work closely with a Msaa volunteering. We were featured in the winter 2022 magazine for aging with MS.
We are also involved in many other things, including our company Twins Coast To Coast.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Twins Coast To Coast is a nonprofit 501(c) company
We’re the Haber twins – Tammy and Terry – identical twins born in Florida in 1968. Today we go by our married names – Tamara Kahn and Terry Hord – and live in California and Georgia – making us TwinsCoast2Coast. We were both diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in our 20’s and are battling this disease together, bonded by our love for each other, our advocacy to find a cure and our passion for helping others on similar journeys.
Although MS has been our constant companion, we focus on enjoying and living each day to the fullest. We’re both married, each of us have 2 daughters and are surrounded by a loving community of extended family and friends. We are MS advocates and warriors, passionate about finding a cure for this illness.
We created TC2C to share the good, the bad and the funny of our lives as two twins living on the East and West Coasts with Multiple Sclerosis. Our aim is to inspire, empower, support and educate others about the challenges of MS while also showing the positives that have followed. Our intent is to simply tell our story, imperfections and all, and hope that it connects and resonates with those going through the life journey of chronic illness, their families and friends, or anyone who enjoys our outlook and experiences. We love communicating with people all over the world and hearing the explorations of others in our community. We invite you to follow along with us as we share our stories.
We are taking new clients for our life and health coaching services. Exciting because you get both Tamara and Terry on a zoom call to help walk people through the difficulties and they’re positive life experiences. It’s program is specialize to the specific names of our clients.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities and skills during our journey on
1. The ability to listen to others. We may have a lot to say, but we want to make sure we hear the persons story as everybody is different and we all can learn from one another.
2. The ability to volunteer and create our philanthropy organization, where we can reach people all over the world to tell our story. And hopes that we can brighten up somebody’s day until let them know that they “got this “
No matter how small or how big life issues may be.
3. Motivational speaking
We always love getting in front of people to talk. But as we have been volunteering with different societies and local organizations, we’ve had the opportunity for many speaking engagements.
If it’s a smile on her face to see people in the audience, listen and interact with our conversation. I’m round table to big lecture mounds. Tamara and Terry are out there, inspiring and motivating others who are going through health issues or maybe a family member or caretaker of the one in need.
Speaking has definitely given us a passion and joy to walk through our personal.
Are people newly diagnosed with multiple sclerosis?
Tamara and Terry want to say to you that life is precious and that you can do this. The advancements in research for medication and Remylenation of the nerves is really something to look forward to. Truly believe that there will be a few people that look like Tamara and Terry in the future. And even if they become paralyzed that there is a bright tomorrow
.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
Our matter is the number one person in our life that made us successful. Even though we were 24 years old when she died, and she was only 44 years old, it taught us to resilient, thoughtful for others going through life challenges
We are grateful for one another as we are just a phone call away or support. We can talk about our highs and low of the day, but most of all that twin relationship.
We have an unexplainable bond that is like no other. We are so lucky to be going through this journey together.
Finding your network of friends, family, and a like communities are our best suggestion they handle, almost anything in life.
“ do Stay strong, my friend, as you’ve got this.”
