We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Forrest Savage. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Forrest below.
Hi Forrest , we’re so appreciative of you taking the time to share your nuggets of wisdom with our community. One of the topics we think is most important for folks looking to level up their lives is building up their self-confidence and self-esteem. Can you share how you developed your confidence?
Throughout my life I have suffered from having very low self-esteem. I’ve never been part of the “in crowd”, I’m horrible at mingling with the opposite sex, and I’ve often times questioned my faith. It’s still a daily struggle, but when I’m performing it’s like a switch that comes on. I can go from being an anxious nervous wreck one second to a confident and charismatic individual the next. There is something about when that first note of music hits…..”its go time”. I feel like when I have a microphone in my hand…..I have control. It’s the only time I feel like I fit in and belong. I wish that other aspects of my life came just as easily.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am one half of a hip-hop group, based out of Lawrence, Kansas, known as Sized Up. Alongside BC (Brandon Clevenger) our group was formed in 2002. We record all of our music in house and have been independently operated since our inception. We perform regularly in our area on the bar/night club scene, but we also donate a lot of our time to fundraisers/benefits that center around substance abuse recovery and mental health issues.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
As someone who has been involved in music over two decades, I’ve wore a lot of hats. I’ve done show booking/promoting, pre/post production, as well as being a performer. The best advice I can give others is to always be your own toughest critic, always push your creative boundries, don’t be afraid to look foolish, believe in yourself, and most importantly have fun doing what you are doing. If your idea of gauging success is based on how much money you make, or how many streams, or monthly listeners you have, then I think you’ve lost sight of what’s truly important…..the audience. I get off on entertaining people and putting smiles on people’s faces.
What’s been one of your main areas of growth this year?
Truthfully although it’s not necessarily musically related, I have been on a long term weight loss journey. At one point I was a few pounds shy of 400 lbs., I had some serious health issues. I suffered a mild heart attack, I was on the cusp of being diabetic, and I had dangerously high blood pressure and cholesterol. With the help of a nutritionist, and a good dieting plan, I have been able to lose 130 lbs, lower my blood pressure, cholesterol, as well as avoiding becoming diabetic. Had I not made some life changes, it’s likely possible that I wouldn’t still be able to perform and do the one thing that truly gives me some sort of purpose. I’m grateful for everyday i get to spend on this Earth.
