We were lucky to catch up with Kimberly Carter recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kimberly, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I feel like I get my work ethic from my mom and dad. When I was younger I always watched my dad work 2-3 jobs at a time and my mom always made sure my siblings and I always had what we needed and wanted. My mom also made sure that we always used our time wisely from getting involved in extracurricular activities to getting a summer job so that we were not just sitting around the house being unproductive. As I got older, I continued to understand the importance of being productive and honing in on your passions.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am Kimberly Carter, the founder and creative director behind Ki Movement Limited Co. Ki Movement is a dance and choreography company that promotes creativeness and movement. My motto is “Fall in love with a new expression” because I believe I am able to create a space for movement anywhere and allow individuals to experience dance in a new and unique light. Along with creating a space for others to fall in love with movement, I also have launched Ki Movement lounge and activewear for men and women. I am very excited for my Breast Cancer Awareness collection, which is now available on my website. This collection is special because my mom was a breast cancer survivor, so I decided to make a donation with a portion of the profits I make from this collection.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I think the three qualities that created a major impactful in my journey are persistence, passion, and creativity. There are so many obstacles that could have discouraged me, but because I love dance and truly want others to feel the love and joy that I feel from dance, I have refused to give up. I think the advice I would give to someone is never forget your why. If you continue to keep your eye on the prize and remember why you wanted to share what you love with others, nothing and no one can stop you.
What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?
I feel like it is always best to be well rounded because it makes you more appealing to your clients and people you want to work with. I also feel like it’s good to be well round because it shows others that you will work hard to be the best version of your self which I believe makes people more interested in what you will do next. I am trying to learn new skills that will benefit my business everyday, specifically, I have been learn how to edit and mix music so that I can create my own music for classes and performances exactly how I like it.
