Meet Avongaleart

We recently connected with Avongaleart and have shared our conversation below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have AvongaleArt with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

My work ethic comes from my vision to create– I want to see what I imagine come to life. From a very young age, my dream has always been to publish my comic, “Reforged”. When I was around 13 years old, I realized that in order to accomplish what I envisioned, I needed to significantly improve my skill set. I began to make it a point to draw at least four hours a day after school. I created an agenda of what I needed to learn, spending hours on realism studies, anatomy, artist styles, environmental backgrounds, you name it. Putting that much time and effort into my art daily, I quickly saw improvement. This inspired me to keep going because I knew I’d achieve my goals if I kept working hard.

I’m now 27, and to this day I still carry that same work mentality with me. I want to keep improving my skills as an artist and writer to see what I’m fully capable of, and it’s fulfilling to see where all my years of effort have finally come to show in my artwork and comic. I look forward to where I’ll go in the future and what I’ll create.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Hi everyone, my name is AvongaleArt! I’m a high fantasy artist with a passion for graphite and comics.

I’ve always been a daydreamer– From a young age I would spend all my free time creating original stories and illustrating the characters involved. It’s consistently been a passion of mine throughout my life, and that enjoyment still fuels my life and career as an artist everyday.

Accompanied by the same dreams I had as a kid, my professional career as an artist includes tabling at conventions and events where I sell prints and merch of the illustrations I’ve made over the years. It’s an incredibly fun and rewarding way to be connected with other passionate creators, while sharing my own work and story to those I meet along the way!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Throughout my artistic journey, the qualities/skills that were most impactful was my willingness to learn and take criticism, my drive toward becoming a better artist, and perseverance. Without these three traits combined I definitely would not be where I’m at right now.

Something that has always been important to me is to constantly improve myself and learn where I can. Perseverance is also equally as necessary, because along the journey there’s always going to be ups and downs, and success doesn’t come immediately. A good example of this is when I first got into selling my work at conventions back in 2018. I’m going to be completely honest– I had absolutely no idea what I was doing or where to even begin. I barely had a working display and less than a handful of prints to sell, and I seriously bombed my first two attempts at tabling at conventions. Those failures caused me to dread vending, yet part of me was still determined to give it another shot. I reflected on them while observing and talking to other artists, and during that journey I met a lot of fantastic creators. I listened to the advice of those around me on how to improve, whether it was from my friends or other fellow artists. Over a few years I gradually saw my vending experiences become more and more successful, and now I primarily make my living off of attending conventions and events as an artist.

To any aspiring artist or creative the best advice I can give is always be open to learning and don’t give up! Treat everything as a learning experience and don’t see things in your journey as a loss– take it as an opportunity to learn and grow!

Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?

Honestly, there have been so many people that have been incredibly helpful and have shaped who I am today. But the first person who comes to mind is my partner, StudioGrimdark. He has always been incredibly supportive and knowledgeable whether it’s building upon my skills as an artist, a writer, a vendor, and much more. Without him, I definitely would not be as successful as I am today.
