Meet Kirsten Flaherty

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kirsten Flaherty. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kirsten below.

Kirsten, we are so deeply grateful to you for opening up about your journey with mental health in the hops that it can help someone who might be going through something similar. Can you talk to us about your mental health journey and how you overcame or persisted despite any issues? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.

Mental health has been a challenge I have faced since childhood, and I have frequently grappled with the inclination to overwork as a way to distract myself from any issues. This tendency can lead to burnout, even in a field I am deeply passionate about. It is essential to prioritize self-care and allow our minds the necessary space to rest. When balancing my career with a sense of self-belief in my work can prove to be difficult, I make a conscious effort to reflect on my progress by comparing my work and progress over the years. It is crucial to recognize the uncertainty of the future and to celebrate small victories while taking the time to enjoy life. Managing mental health is an ongoing journey, and it is vital to practice self-care and embrace moments of stillness along the way.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I am a tattoo artist specializing in black and grey fine line work, although I am open to tattooing in all styles. I am currently based out of Queen of Crowns Tattoo in Bushwick, Brooklyn. One of the most rewarding aspects of my profession is the opportunity to collaborate with clients on their tattoo ideas, creating unique pieces that they will cherish for a lifetime.

In my spare time, I also draw pet portraits, donating a portion of each sale to a local animal shelter. Crafting a portrait is particularly meaningful to me, as many clients wish to celebrate their beloved pets, including those who have passed away. After the loss of my dog Otis last year, I understand the profound connection people have with their animals, and I strive to bring comfort and joy to others who share that love.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

I believe that being open to critiques and feedback from peers is essential for personal and professional growth. Constructive criticism allows artists to refine their skills, gain new perspectives, and enhance their creative processes.

Fostering an environment of kindness and honesty among fellow artists is crucial. When we support one another with genuine encouragement and constructive insights, we create a culture of mutual respect and collaboration. This supportive community not only benefits individual artists but also strengthens the artistic landscape as a whole. By engaging in open dialogue and sharing our experiences, we can uplift each other, inspire creativity, and collectively push the boundaries of our craft. Ultimately, embracing feedback and fostering a spirit of collaboration enriches both our work and our community.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?

My ideal client is someone who is open to collaborating on ideas while being receptive to guidance from a tattoo artist. When I recommend specific placements or sizes, I do so with consideration for how the tattoo will age on your body, as well as how it will complement any existing or future tattoos.

It is essential to value the expertise of your tattoo artist while also providing your own feedback. I want you to be completely satisfied with your tattoo, so if there are any changes or adjustments you’d like to discuss, please feel free to voice them. Together, we can create a piece that you will love for years to come.
