Meet LaTomya Doctor

We were lucky to catch up with LaTomya Doctor recently and have shared our conversation below.

LaTomya, thanks so much for taking the time to share your insights and lessons with us today. We’re particularly interested in hearing about how you became such a resilient person. Where do you get your resilience from?
From my late maternal grandmother, Annabelle Holmes. From a young girl, she taught me to “Step on can’t!” There is nothing in this world that I am unable to accomplish if I put my mind, heart, and dedication towards it. Obstacles are a part of life, and if we stop or give up every time something gets hard, success would not be possible. As a mom of three, I pride myself on being a role model to my children so they don’t have to look far for inspiration. If I can do it, then so can they!

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the owner of the Beauteeful Sole Collection. A collection for those looking for fashionable items, such as shoes, graphic tees, handbags and other accessories. I started my brand right after the pandemic ended. With the amount of loss, depression and upset the pandemic brought to our country and the world, I wanted to create a brand where women could shop without breaking the bank and feel good about themselves. I am grateful to have a business that allows me to do just that.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say, do your research. There is a ton of information available. Take the time to decide on what you want for your business. Lay out a plan and move forward. Most importantly, do not worry about where others are in their journey. Set goals for your business and network!! I enjoy going to events that allow for vendors. Being that I am a small business owner, getting out to meet new people is the best part of being in this business. I love meeting other business owners, sharing our stories of how things are going. Every day is not a great day of revenue, but every day I get to try again. The only way to fail is to stop trying!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I feel overwhelmed I take a step-back. I give my brain space to relax and focus on something else. This will include, watching a movie, spending time with my family, and prayer. Owning a business is not easy, and there are many days that I feel overwhelmed in trying to find ways to stay relevant. Once I have had a moment to decompress, I am able to focus on what overwhelmed me and develop a plan of action.

I have found that following other successful business and seeing how they market and reach their client base is one of the best strategies. You will find many gems to help push your business forward even if you’re like me and funding your business yourself.
