We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Caitlin Alejandre. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Caitlin below.
Caitlin , so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
Taking breaks from my work helps a lot! Stepping away from it and not thinking about it for a little bit allows me to come back with fresh eyes. It also helps new ideas come to me- possibly because I’m not actively searching for something.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an artist & illustrator who specializes in digital and watercolor mediums! However, I love experimenting which has led me to learn 3D digital sculpting, 2D animation and screen printing.
What I love most about what I do is the different opportunities! My art has the ability to be used for a variety of projects ranging from poster designs, children’s book illustrations, character designs- just about anything I want!
Currently I am focusing on selling my art at anime/comic conventions as well as online. I am also working on a children’s book- which I am very excited about and can’t wait to share!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
I would say dedication, practice and learning the fundamentals of art have been the most impactful.
Professional art is a lot of hard work. It takes time to develop an artistic voice and to learn the fundamentals. Definitely don’t cut corners! Learning anatomy, perspective, etc are very important to know and practicing these will help when creating art. Be sure to dedicate yourself in an effort to improve as an artist! Watch tutorials, sketch whenever you can, take classes- every little step will lead to some amazing art. Some progress is better than no progress.

What do you do when you feel overwhelmed? Any advice or strategies?
When I feel overwhelmed I go to my husband, Hector, for support. He helps remind me that if things are out of control- it is what it is. Just do what you can.
Whenever this happens, following his advice helps a lot. In the end, it works out or I at least learn what I can do to prevent myself from being overwhelmed. So do what you can, make a list of things to do if needed and knock off things one at a time!
