Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Jay Columbus. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Jay, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
For years I thought that because I didn’t have thousands and thousands of streams and followers that I wasn’t actually any good at what I do, and that I was just fooling myself by continuing to make music. While wasting a bunch of money. But I had to snap out of that and recognize that even though it’s small at the moment, I do have a collective of loyal supporters who watch what I’m doing and support me along the way. And I remain grateful for that. I also had to force myself to understand that anything worth having is worth working for, and that it takes time to build a brand from scratch. It’s been a slow march, but remaining consistent has allowed me to expand my supporter base. And while doing that, I receive constant confirmation that I’m needed in this space. So I just keep going until my audience finds me, because I know there are lots of people searching for what I have to offer.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I’m a singer-songwriter-producer. Even though there are many who describes themselves that way, my particular brand of that is exciting because I’m genre jumper (I just made that up haha). I’m inspired by so many people and so many sounds, and I believe that makes my music all the more distinct and unique. I’m also able to move between genres while always staying true to what I like and who I am. I’ve been able to take my love for R&B music and apply it to many other genres I love like house, afrobeats, amapiano, pop, and indie alternative. My latest project FRAGMENTS is a 3-part series that moves from house to R&B to indie alternative themes. My upcoming album, FRAGMENTS, Vol. 2: Ruin is the R&B counterpart to Vol. 1 that I released in 2023. Vol. 2 is out on Nov. 12 and I can’t wait for folks to hear the contrast from Vol. 1 while experiencing the synergy of the two.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Consistency, confidence, and gratitude. Those have been the most important things to embody for me. I’d advise any artist to work on these traits because consistency is needed to grow; confidence is needed to endure; and gratitude is needed to attract positive energy to your situation.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking for other artists who have sounds that compliment mine to collaborate with, and who share my passion. I’m also looking for a MANAGER!! Hahaha. It’s rough being the talent and the business infrastructure for the brand. So if anyone out there is looking for a great artist to manage and do great work with….HIT ME! Hahaha. No, but really, Send me an email – itsjaycolumbusnow@gmail.com.
