Meet Joe Brown

We were lucky to catch up with Joe Brown recently and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Joe, so great to have you on the platform. There’s so much we want to ask you, but let’s start with the topic of self-care. Do you do anything for self-care and if so, do you think it’s had a meaningful impact on your effectiveness?

I get out in nature as much as possible. Walking thru the forest is meditative. I also go on multi day/week bike adventures.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

I make unique things with leather. I’ve done a variety of things over the years and this craft has taken me on many adventures. I’ve met a lot of cool people over the years as well. I have fun getting creative with different combinations of colors, and making unique things. I’ll be announcing some new items that’ll be added to my inventory by the end of this year.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Trying out different things and seeing how they turn out, will lead to more ideas. I’ve had so many ideas over the years as far as what I wanted to make. Each new design idea I’ve tried out has given me new ideas. Sometimes they don’t turn out the way I planned or thought they would. They take me down different paths though. Not giving up is a good quality.

What would you advise – going all in on your strengths or investing on areas where you aren’t as strong to be more well-rounded?

It’s good to utilize strengths, but it’s important to invest in areas that need improvement. When I started this journey into my this craft, I had very little knowledge on what I was doing. I had a desire to learn and I don’t give up on things I want to do. Over the years I had gotten to a point where I couldn’t find many new things to learn about the things I was making. I realized that taking classes on specific things I wanted to learn about was a good route to go. Prior to that, I thought I could learn everything on my own. I didn’t realize how much I didn’t know before taking classes. It’s good to stay teachable because when you think you know it all, or can do it yourself, you close the door on learning more.
